Favorite non-WotC publishers

I place Green Ronin as number 1 non-WotC d20 publisher as it is the only one who actually keeps high standards in all its releases. Although, I haven't read all their books, I am still looking for one which is not good.

Second place goes to the Penumbra imprint by Atlas Games. Most of their stuff is really good.

Unfortunely, no other d20 company have impressed me with the overall quality of their products. Some such as FFG and AEG has some really good products in uneven lines, whereas some popular publishers, such as Malvahoc or Mongoose, really failed to impress me so far.

In no particular order:

  • Bad Axe Games: Good things come in small packages, and Heroes of High Favor is a very good thing.
  • EN Publishing: Good things come in small packages, and I am hooked on PDFs thanks to EN (and Natural 20 Press before)
  • Sword & Sorcery: Patiently awaiting my first Scarred Lands opportunity
  • Living Imagination: Good things come in huge packages. I am running a Twin Crowns campaign, using that book and the Streets of Silver city book. The depth, the detail, and the consistency of quality have truly impressed me.

I am a picky consumer, and tend to research heavily before buying, so I just don't have enough products from some of the other publishers to judge them fairly. This doesn't mean I dislike them, it just means I have not had an immediate or near-future use for many of their products.

AEG - Rokugan stuff and the Dragons book is pretty nifty
Green Ronin - Mutants and Masterminds, Legions of Hell, Armies of the Abyss
Guardians of Order - BESM d20
Malhavoc Press - everything is wicked
Mongoose - their stuff is cool and I don't mind house ruling every now and then

Thanks for all the props, guys!

I was just sitting here plugging away at a ton of different projects-- and you guys just rekindled the flame under my ass!

There's more coming, I promise! Quality, not quantity... That's where it's at!

My faves: Fantasy Flight, Malhavoc, Necromancer-- though I haven't had much time to buy anything lately! Still waiting to really dig into DungeonCraft and Midnight like I outta do... They are sitting here on the floor... calling... seductively...

Gotta write! Gotta write!

Bastion Press
Fantasy Flight Games
Mongoose Publishing

These three companies make up the mass majority of my shelves, along with WOTC.

Some other favorites include:

Perpetrated Press (only two books so far, but I love 'em!)

Kenzer (I don't use the setting, but I love the adventures)

EN Publishing (more scattered, since there's not many print books yet, but I've never been disappointed)

I've also got books here and there from Sword & Sorcery Studios, Green Ronin, Mystic Eye Games, Living Imagination, and Goodman Games.
