Well! Looks like I might have the opportunity (possibly) to run something sooner than I envisioned. With our long-running campaign probably coming to an end very shortly, we're having discussions about what to do next this weekend.

I think I'm going to throw my hat into the ring as a potential DM for a campaign centered around Freeport.

But I'll no doubt borrow, beg and steal information from any source I can get my hands on, as is my usual custom.

Sasserine, mostly due to the map, but other details (that I can't expound upon properly, since I'm at the office) as well.

Not Freeport, at all. "God Squad? I think not.

Five Fingers a close second, but loses some (lame, I know) points because of lack of availability and decreased usefulness in a "standard" campaign.

Some have claimed it's too tied to the AP - How!? Sasserine features in only the first couple of adventures of the AP. And a recent Dungeon adventure (with no ties to the AP) is set entirely within Sasserine.

Sasserine is just a cool city, hands down. My players really loved the place, and I think they would have been perfectly fine with the entire STAP taking place within the city. In any case, it's going to be ported over to my new campaign world, although how I'll do it still remains a mystery.
I totally dig Sasserine. My players loved it. It's a tough call, really. It's just that Freeport has a strong sentimental place in my heart.

What was the recent Dungeon adventure, not tied to the AP?

As far as I can tell, doing a search in the PDF, there isn't any mention of the God Squad in the new Pirate's Guide to Freeport

I perused Pirates Guide to Freeport and Five Fingers extensively at GenCon, and was pretty evenly split. PGtF was probably easier to drop into a stock setting, and it has the history (good and bad). Five Fingers just reads really really well. I defy anyone to sit down with that book and not want to play in that city.

I ended up getting neither at GenCon, but I'll probably end up getting both eventually. Given a choice, I'd rather play in Five Fingers, though.

favorite pirate city?

homebrewed. uses of all those named plus a few others.

add sanctuary (thieves world) and add lankhmar, illithmar (nehwon).

now run it like a cross between ravenloft and call of cthulhu (for horror, dread, terror), cyberpunk2020, shadowrun and menzobarranzan (for paranoia, politics, intrigue), mackbolan and conan (for firepower, bodycount, brutality) spelljammer and planescape (for mobility, races and biggness).

still, as written, sasserine seems to be a favorite.

did any of you play through prophyr house (paizo)? liked that too.

Okay, let's say I want to run a game in Sasserine separate from Savage Tides. Are the free downloads all I need or is there more description of the city in the Dungeon issues?

thanks,
Frank

The player's guide and map free downloads are pretty nifty, but there's a fair bit more material (notably, the NPCs) that are in the adventures themselves.

If you're the kind of GM who doesn't mind filling in lots of blank spaces, the free download stuff is enough to run with, though. Certainly it's not going to be nearly as complete a settings as Freeport or Five Fingers is going to be, though.
