And, correct me if I'm wrong here, but is there anything to prevent a polymorph self spell from changing into, say, a Solar? (28 STR, 20 CON, 20 DEX, SR32, regeneration 15, immunity to electricity, cold, acid, and 20 fire resistance) or anything else disturbingly powerful?

Well, besides a Dispel Magic or Antimagic Field, I guess.

Well there is a HD limitation I believe, not to mention polymorph doesn't grant supernatural, spell-like or even extraordinary abilities.

you get, size, natural armour, physical stats, and natural movement modes.

*note - answering this from memory so I may have screwed up on the details, but this should more or less be correct.

However, I didn't read anything (From the Psionic version of Polymorph Self) of a HD limitation. Cuts down on gaining insane monster abilities, but I would guess then that most likely popular forms to shift to would be giants (Firbolgs with 36 STR, anyone?)

The revised version of polymorph from T&B places a HD limit equal to the greater of the HD of the caster or the recipient, with a max of 15HD. The revised version also doesn't allow you to switch forms as a full round action, your stuck with the form you morph into short of casting it again.

Though personally I would let the psions keep the version in the PsiHB just for variety and because in general psions are a little weaker.

I was thinking about making some sort of min/maxed Fighter/Psychic Warrior/Lion (Singha?) Rager build when I came across the PolySelf spell at 4th. I agree that Psions need some tinkering, but I can see how this spell could get out of hand (The solar form would give you a +21 natural AC, frex). With the 15HD matching limit, it'd be a bit of a wait before the really useful creatures can be morphed. It feels a bit cheesy to now revolve the character around the polyself spell though as it would be a true DMs headache, so I'll do some comparisons with magical items and see if spending those extra psychic warrior levels are worth it :)

In any case, the best forms are Pixie, Annis Hag, and Troll. They all give you very decent AC that still stacks with pretty much all enhancements except natural armos, and a variety of bonuses. Pixies fly very nicely, get a size bonus to hit, and have good dexterity for ranged attacks. Annis Hags and Trolls get reach, big natural armor, high strengths, and enhanced speed.

If you're a shifter, things can get really broken in a couple of forms. Clay Golems are immune to almost every form of attack and magic, and are behemoths in combat. Will-o'-the-wisps have incredible AC, are invisible (and not subject to any ability that sees invisibility), and are immune to all offensive spells except magic missile and maze.

Hill, stone, frost and fire giants are also some very nasty possibilities. Most of them are especially good for a character in heavy armor, since their low Dex isn't a problem in that case.
