Favorite RPG assistant software?

Waldo

First Post
Tell me what your favorite RPG pen and paper assistant is and why. I know we have some software designers here who regularly tell us of their products, but I was hoping to hear from users about what they find the best.

The most useful, most intuitive, most customizable, best priced, best supported, anything. You can mention bad things, too, but let's try and by civil ;)

I'm hoping to streamline my campaign a bit and I want to know what other people love and why.

Thanks!

DM's Familiar is the greatest program since sliced bread. In fact, the guy who wrote DM's Familiar, also invented sliced bread. It's true. DMF...

Oh. shucks. nevermind.

RolePlayingMaster

For me it's roleplayingmaster by far... That's mainly because I want to be able to write an entire campaign in the tool by documenting and preparing every adventure with all the maps, odd items, characters, battles etc... and Roleplayingmaster does a perfect job on that. The learning curve's a bit daunting at first, but after that... WOW!

I have a few, since I recently got a new laptop that I use as a DM screen (I also have some blanksheets of paper with me whenever I play, just for notes). THese are my favorite programs:

Digital Assistant: This program is great for storing general campaign information, recurring NPCs, and even adventures. It is useable free, though if you want to export/import information you have to pay for the software. The adventure interface is a little weak, but I use it for all my general notes, NPCs, campaign info, and journal. If money is tight this is a great piece of software.

PCGen- You probably have already seen this one, but PCGEn is the best character generating program available. Its a little hard to customize, but it makes character generation effortless, and it can put together some really nice HTML Character sheets.

RedBlade 3e: Not as good a character generator as PCGen, but very easy to customize. I use it once in a while when I need to create a really odd NPC.

Interactive Dungeond: THis progrm lets you design a dungeon and have your players explore it on screen. The graphics are rough, but the gimmick potential is great.

DM Screen: A slightly useful program that summarizes several useful charts, just like a real DM screen.

AUTORelm: Your best bet for free mapping.

All of these programs are free and can be found around EN World.

Hope that helps.

I think it's unfortunate that the 'free programs' sometimes get all the screen time on this forum, but I will agree many of them are quite good at what they do. I won't go into a rant about how good I think my software is, or anything, I'll just suggest that you check out the ENnie nominees, other threads farther back in this forum, and the electronic utilities sections. Many "non-free" products are very well done, for a good reason - customers do not buy poor quality products. That makes no sense, does it?

True Twin Rose, free programs arent the only programs that are worth talkiong about. And they arent the only ones brought up. People are just surprised when they find something for free that impresses them, you expect to be impressed by something you pay for( no old ET jokes here). So they like to point them out.

Your program is a fine one. Worth looking at. I suggest also looking at TableSmith(shareware), Fractal Mapper(great program about $35), JhNamegen Gold(low price).
I consider these programs well worth the money.

not all free

Hm, there´s only one post about free software in this thread, so it ain´t that bad (yet) ;) But okay, free software does get more attention since it can save a few bucks.

Howerer, yesterday I bought DM Genie as well (next to RolePlayingMaster which I ranted about earlier in this thread) and I´d recommend DM Genie to anyone asking for a tool.

It´s worth every penny IMHO. The campaign editor is excellent, especially with the hyperlink functionality which makes navigation within an adventure/campaign easy as can be.

Why I bought both? RolePlayingMaster has better D20 Modern support, that´s mainly the reason:) DM Genie is technically superior and more stable and a better campaign writing help.

Since Chaz brought up JHNameGen, I'll chime in with a vote for EBoN (the Everchanging Book of Names). It is a one-trick pony, but it is the best name generation software out there, IMO. I've been using it for several years and have never been disappointed by it. It is an excellent way to create names from different cultural backgrounds.

Computer D&D aids

For any computer aid, you have to sit down and think through what you really want to have your 'aid' do for you in your campaign. Do you want a program that does everything, i.e. you type, click, scan, etc EVERYTHING into the program and have it be the be-all-end-all gaming aid(with no need for any reference materials, notes, etc)? Do you want your 'aid' to do minimal things for you, just have tables, reference materials, etc for your campaign, so you don't have to lug books with you to the gaming sessions? Do you want something in between? Once you decide on which of the 3, then the advice you will receive in forums like these, will be much more helpful for you, because you can weed out the ones that don't fit your style.
The programs that allow you to do everything tend to be labor intensive on the front end(getting everything for your gaming session into the program) and have steep learning curves. BUT, once you get up on that curve, they do everything you could ever want during your sessions. Programs such as Roleplaying Master are good programs in this area.
The programs that are for minimal intrusion, which have tables, and reference materials all will do what you need, if this is what you choose.
My preference is for somewhere in between. I want my computer aid to do the things that take up all my time in a gaming session, without the program becoming the actual gaming session. Instead of having lots of bells and whistles which take away from the gaming atmosphere(IMHO) and remove the GM from the gaming session, I want my program to help manage and keep track of combat, which always bogs down in even moderate sized battles. I want the ability to quickly and easily reference any rule, monster, magic item, skill, Feat, etc right when I need it, without the dreaded....'He's opening up the books'. I want the aid to be able to keep campaign notes however detailed or sparse. I want the aid to keep all my NPCs and PCs in an easily accessible area. I don't need a program to make maps, dungeons, manage encounters (especially 3d mapping or 2d mapping movements). I want a program that manages the 10% of the things that DM's spend 90% of their gaming time on. For my money, you can't get any better than DMs Familiar! The program is excellent! The support is unbelievable. Todd, the programmer and designer, is always lurking on the messageboards, answering questions directly and is frequently coming out with updates and revisions to better the program ---- with direct input from the users of his program. Most of the SRD items are easily entered (via download) from another forum so you don't have to enter ANY of those things yourself. This program has a combat board that is second to none. You can manage combat in as detailed a manner as you want (except NO 3d or 2d mapping of the participants) or as minimal as you want (like I do.... keeps track of Initiative, turns, HP etc and let the players and the DM roll the dice). There is an easy 'codex tree' which allows you to enter your campaign notes in a tree fashion. Every rule, skill, feat, spell, magic or non-magic item is easily accessible and quickly searched for and found, in the programs databases with a simple click.
That is my LONG two-cents worth. Hope it help you. Thanks for 'listening.'
