I saw this in the theater.

The contrast of this vs Transformers: The Movie was STARK. Definitely reinforced my Transformers Supremacist leanings.

I kinda feel they got a bum rap. The Hanna-Barbera cartoon was aimed towards a younger subset of gradeschoolers, and I think that was a strategic mistake, however the toys themselves I don't think were specifically worse.

Yes, some of them seemed a little cheaper, sillier, or ridiculous. Their combiner didn't hold a candle to Devastator, and the Rock Lords were a definite WTF moment. However, some of the higher-price point ones (in particular Bug Bite and Psycho) rivalled anything Transformers had at the time. And let's not dismiss how bad (Ratchet and Ironhide) or odd (are rocks really a stranger alt-mode than a microscope?) some of the Transformers toys of the same era were. Certainly I think they did right by having a playset (their spaceship/walker/serial-numbers-filled-off-ATAT) come out years before Transformers got their city-bots.

the thing is there are some amazing character designs and personalities and while not every one is a winner, there are a lot to choose from.

Take a personal favorite.

Ironhide

This tough old warhorse with a southern drawl just doesn't know when to quit and often acts as Primes backup in decisions and defense.

I stand by my opinion that the sequal to Bumblebee should have been Ironhide ending up in an old folks home when he landed on earth where they essentially did the old movie "Cocoon" while dealing with decepticon shenanigans.

Time to bring up another flash from the past: DR. SMOOV
