I was currious what people's favorite spells of each level were and why. So If you want list one to two spells for each level and why you like them so much.

Disintegrate (for obvious reasons) lvl 6 i believe.
and Torrent of Tears: the description says "target become emotionally distraught." need i say more? making the bad guy cry midcombat and whine about us beating him never gets old.

Lv3: haste, slow. Fun for the whole party and unfun for all the foes. Plus, slow continues to be useful even at higher lvs (when heightened) since many enemies continue to have poor will saves, and there are no known immunities to it.

Solid Fog. No save. No SR. If you don't have FoM or some sort of teleportation, you are boned for ~2 rounds while I kill all your friends and when you finally get out, the last thing you'll see is a greatsword to the face.

And if you do it right, you can use it to knock flying creatures with low maneuverability classes out of the sky with a well timed stall. Owned!

Grease, Color Spray, and the Orb spells are all faves. I'm a Lighting Bolt junkie...and have often made electrically themed arcanists. Shrink Item, Enlarge, Earthen Grasp...love 'em. Bull's Strength is a virtual must in our party, as is Haste.

That all said, I wish Chromatic Orb had been updated into post-2Ed.

Core sorc/wizard...

0: Prestidigitation. Nothing else comes close here, though I've had a lot of fun with ghost sound.
1: Grease, so many uses.
Silent Image, see Grease.
Nystul's Magic Aura: I love using this + bluff to pawn stuff off as "bargain" magic items...
2: Scorching Ray, it just feels good to immolate things.
Web
3: Suggestion; The best part is if you have telepathy and use it to secretly orchestrate NPC actions without the party paladin realizing what's going on.
Fly; Even if you don't need it to reach/avoid anything, you just feel more badass when you tell the DM "I glide along about 2 ft off the ground."
4: Polymorph. It's just so much fun! Screw you, internet, for demanding it to be insta-banned!
Evard's Black Tentacles: Because hentai is fun to watch, not to partake in.
5: Telekinesis
Rock to Mud
6: Contingency; Generally useful; I always want to think of some cool Xanatos Gambit usage with it but often am too lazy.
Mislead
Chain lightning
7: Mord's Magnificent Mansion
Prismatic Spray: "It's like a box of chocolates..."
Simulacrum
Project Image, mostly because of how awesome it was in Baldur's Gate 2
8: Moment of Prescience
Irresistable Dance
Horrid Wilting
9: Time Stop

I haven't been a sorcerer for very long ... can't give you up to level 9.

Level 1: benign transposition. I cannot tell you how many times this has helped me or an ally get out of a sticky situation.

Level 2: heroics. Someone needs to become a better fighter in an instant? Done.

Level 3: disobedience. Immunity from charms and compulsions as a 3rd level spell, when they tend to so royally screw the people in the party with bad Will saves.

Level 4: greater luminous armor, but primarily because I'm an abjurant champion. assay spell resistance or ruin delver's fortune otherwise, to solve the necessities of overcoming SR, or to gain instant immunity to poison, fear, or instant evasion.

I've rolled many kinds of wizards/sorcerers in my life, but they all had similar spell selection. However, there are some spells that are MUSTHAVE for gameplay fun.

Only core.

0: Detect Magic, magic items handy GPS.
Light, dark vision is for weenies.

1: Shocking Grasp, once I sentenced an entire party of npcs to death by poking.
Erase, because.

2: Web, best spell ever made.
Shatter, GASP that guy has a sword... *had*

3: Explosive Runes, if you are reading this *BOOM!*
Blink, tastes like Houdini.

4: Dimension Door, *swirling* "This is an unsanctioned use of magical energy. All involved will be held. This disturbance is OVER."
Fire Shield/Stoneskin combo, what can I say? I love classics.

5: Mirage Arcana, the show must go on.
Telekinesis, the force is strong in me.

6: Disintegrate, POWAAAAH!
Antimagic Field or Contingency, if I can't get my hands on Craft Contingency feat.

7: Simulacrum, always wanted to be in 2 places at the same time.
Spell Turning, hehehe. I love this thing.

8: Power Word; Stun, STOP! It's hammer time.
Otiluk's Telekinetic Sphere, baddass retreat.

9: Mordekain's Disjunction, this thing should be banned.
Time Stop, classic fun.

Purely my favorites for each level. I take these spells with every character I make.

0. Prestigitation. It cooks, it cleans, it does your laundry! Plus, it's fun being the only player not covered in gelatenous slime after a fight, then asking the other players to pay you for cleaning them off.

1. Silent Image. Depending on how creative you are with it, you can do pretty much anything. My favorite use still has to be casting a Silent version of this spell, then shouting out GATE and having a image of a portal to the Far Realm opening, with Cthuhlu reaching through, surrounded by all the colors of madness. Will save vs. crapping your pants. Go Minor Image for even more fun!

2. Invisibility. So many applications, so little time.

3. Explosive Runes. 5 pages worth of explosive runes? 1 day. Pens to write cryptic omens? 1 gp. The sound of the thieves following you into the dungeon exploding? Priceless.

4. Dimension Door. This spell has many versatile applications. It can get you places you shouldn't be allowed to go. It can get you out of them again. It WILL save your life when you cast it, and that's more than most spells can do, let alone a 4th level one.

5. Teleport. It's like Dimension Door, only it takes you across CONTINENTS. Level 9 is just about the point where the party transitions from Wandering Band of Adventurers to Defenders of the Realm, and this spell makes it happen.

6. True Seeing. This spell rips through EVERYTHING. It's the ultimate support spell for any utility mage. Never leave home without it.

7. Plane Shift. Did I say Defenders of the Realm? Because I meant Defenders of the Multiverse.

8. Prying Eyes, Greater. You will never, ever, be caught off guard again.

9. TIme Stoop. This is pretty much an I WIN button. Use Sudden Maximize or Sudden Empower for fun and profit.

1) Burning Hands: Because no one else in your party will be able to stop the Spider Swarm
2) Glitterdust: Invisible Rogue? Now I just see a blind man poking around with his dagger
3) Fireball: Set battlefield to 500 degress and roasted goblins are ready
4) Greater Invisibility: The party rogue will give you the best foot rub ever for this
5) Baleful Polymorph: "I'll turn you into a toad"
6) Stone to Flesh: Because :):):):) happens... to rogues... fighting medusas...
7) Finger of Death: Poke, you're dead
8) Iron Body: nuff said
9) Mass Hold Monster: quickly allows the party to destroy the opposition
