Fear of house rules?

Hmm no books at the table. Thats a damn good idea.

I am also thinking of starting up a yahoo group or something for the game. A place where everyone can discuss houserules and get questions about the game world answered in between sessions, etc. That way everyone can see any changes and propose thier own with people having time to actually check stuff out and decide without feeling rushed.

Our group has always done this, and it's helped the game immensely. It has also helped us to keep in touch with those who have moved, etc.

As much as I hate Yahell, the many features of their Groups server work very nicely for what you are planning. Do make that group; you'll be glad you did!

if you're going to use house rules, its best to have them all written down and available, ie no surprises

also, its helpful to write out the reason for each houserule

So anyway everyone else wants to try the newer stuff and this player seems fairly serius about the game so i would like to give him a shot (plus we could use another player). But the guy is phobic about non 3.5 stuff. He didnt even know what OGL stuff was.

You could always refer him to Rule 0, which is an official rule....

I dont know some of the specifics. Its really just the mind set that confuses me. Only playing with one game system is kind of like saying that you just bought this new video game and you like it so your never going to buy or rent another video game again.

So far i cant really point to one system that i think was best, lol though i can definately think of the one i think is worst. Anyway when i think about a new game i think "well i liked the magic from this, and classes from that, and this setting over here" then i throw some of my own stuff to glue it all together and voila, gaming stew.

Its not allways pretty, sometimes there are holes, and sometimes its great. But the people who i have played with for years know its gonna be a new experience each campaign and we are all gonna get to toss in a few ideas. The whole is just more fun that way to me.

So does anyone know a person who only likes straight by the book gaming? And if so what do they say is the appeal that balances out the lack of creative control?

What is the rule of 0?

The rule of 0 is "The DM is always right." In any sort of dispute, what you say goes... but always give the players a fair shake before slamming down the hammer. Some rules can be argued, but don't need to be discussed at length during the game. Do whatever is necessary to move the game on and deal with the player's problem later.
