Fear of house rules?

They did remove some of them. WoTC seems to be doing its best to render the DM to an autodice roller in the background. But anyone who has played for a while knows that sometimes its just necessary whether they can find it in the book or not.

I am sometimes of reluctant to see too many house rules. Some are okay, especially if they seem to make sense (which is very, very subjective of course, so I should say makes sense to me! ;) ).

I think my reservation of too many house rules are two fold. Too many house rules and it is harder for someone to drop into the game without having to relearn a lot of rules or how things work in this game. Now with only a small list of changes this is much less of an issue. Pull out a binder of changes though and the problem arises.

The other part of my reservation is bad experience with a past DM. The bulk of the DM's experience in question was from the 2e days. So his house rules seemed more like rules put in place because he hadn't quite finished that section of the 3.x Rulebook. This ended up in a horrible mish mash of rules that took some of the fun out of the game from the rules perspective.

Maybe it depends on what you like. For me the game is the story and situations the players are in. Kind of like one of those big online games where the players can do just about anything and there is a structure in place as to what badguys/goodguys, monsters are where and what sort of things they are all doing while the players are running around.

The books just tell you what dice to roll. They really arent the game. The people are the game.
