Feats in Magic Items

Alright here are the cost of feats in items from the DMG and MoF. I've shown my math after, feel free to let me know if I have made a mistake (and I'm sure I have ;)).

Imp. Unarmed = 1,000gp (Bracers of Striking MoF)

Imp. Disarm 1,000gp (Cloak of Battle MoF) 22600gp - 16000 (+4 arm) - 4.6k (double cost +1 staff) = 2x Feat

Imp. Init = 3,000gp (Bracers of Blinding Strike MoF) 106k- 36k (+6 arm) - 64k (doubled cost Speed weapon) = 2x Imp Init Cost

Combat Ref, Blind-Fight, Mobility, Sunder, Expertise = 3,000gp same as Imp. Init according to DMG intelligent items

Alertness = 4,000gp (Dark Blue Rhom. Ioun Stone DMG)

Snatch Arrow = 4,000gp (Gloves of Snaring DMG)

These take some guess work so I'll give it a shot.

Trample, Ride by Att, Spirited Charge = 1500gp (Horseshoes of the Peerkess Steed ElH) 217k - 4k (double cost +10 comp) - 200k (SR 32) - 4k? (guessed from Boots of Striding and Springing (post errata)) = 2x cost of the 3 feats

Cleave = 5,000gp (Sylvan Scim. DMG, if +1d6(no type dam. is +2 market value))

And these make no sense

Spell Penetration = -8150 gp (Robe of Archmagi DMG) 75k - 50k (SR) - [.7 (alignment restriction) * (50k (double cost arm) - 2k (+1 saves)] = .7 * (2x Feat) -11.4 = 1.4 x feat

Improved Combat Reflexes [Epic] = -560,000gp [Everwhirling Chain ELH] 5220325 - 325 MW Chain - 5780000 [+17 weapon]

I will try to do the rest of ELH and the splat books today.

Edit- Some formatting mistakes.

personally I feel that feats in magic items should cost a lot more. Feats are somewhat rare things that define your character and shouldn't be able to be bought for a few k of gold. In the formula I made no one of the items can cost less then 25000gp and that is for a feat with no prereqs or anything, they only get more expensive as the prereqs stack up. I'd say check out future editions of Dragon but I have a feeling I'm prolly gonna be posting my simple little formula here.

What about spells? Spells are far more powerful than feats, and you get more of those for pretty cheap. For 36,000gp, you get a nice chunk of bonus spells, or just pick up a Ring of Wizardry. IMO, a single (nonepic) feat should never cost more than a 2nd level spell.

I think they just fumbled with the price. Maybe they thought it was a +16 Weapon (5.120.000) which would price the improved combat reflexes at 100.000.

That is what I think too. They also have the cost for being immune to energy drain plus Positive Energy Aura [Epic Feat] at 200,000gp. So I would guess half is for the epic feat.

I agree with kreynolds.

In the abstract I think you are correct that feats are precious, character defining features. (That was my main argument in the old Wishing for Feats thread.) But in practice, most feats are much less potent than you suggest. Or perhaps you don't remember how far a little lucre can go with magic items?

Examples:
--Winged Boots (12000gp) makes Endurance or Running laughable, among other things.
--Stone of Good Luck (10000gp) is better that a vast array of skill improving feats, and save boosting feats as well.
--Eyes of the Eagle (1000gp) is better than Alertness.
--Even the mighty Minor Cloak of Displacement is a mere 20000gp.

You should also take a peek at the spell Permenancy. For 500-1500xp (nominally worth 2500-7500gp), you can gain some pretty cool effects that feats can't touch.

Another you may not realize is vanilla 3e does not really support the concept of character defining magic items. A Real Feat is something you can build a character concept around. A magic item is that can easily be taken away.

I disagree. Look at the feat and ability point progressions. You get a feat every three levels, and an ability score every four. So, ability scores are (supply and demand) more precious than feats. So the feat items should be comparable or slightly cheaper than ability score items. Perhaps you should take the number of feats in an item, squared, times 1000gp. This would make it equivalent to an ability bump item (assuming all feats are in the same 'chain' to be similar powers).
