Aren't they great? Hard sci-fi, horror, epic scope, great characterization... these books really took me by surprise.

They took me by surprise too. They were handed to me by a friend who said "You gotta read these", and I gave them a shot. Fantastic stuff. I am surprised it hasn't shown up ever in the nominations for sci-fi awards.

I can't believe that, either. I didn't do an extensive search, but they sure weren't nomiated for a Hugo... Maybe in England??

To hazzard a guess I'd say it has something to do with their subject matter --its like every pulp paperback from every genre, all at once, with emphasis on the spaceships-- specifically the horror-novel aspect, but I'm not sure that holds up.

Dan Simmon's Hyperion is nearly as out-there {OK, so Simmon's doesn't include Al Capone as a character. But Hamilton, against all odds, pulls it off, so more points to him}, and it won a Hugo.

Any other fans of these books care to weigh in?

I just read Lord of Light based on reccomendations from this board. It was good. However, I doubt that my 1 year of World Religions gives me the best background to appreciate it.

reading book 3, pt.2 or song of fire and ice...

and it's interferring with my life. so, thanks Enboards, not all your recomendations do suck!!!

it's a good series, but i found it got a wee bit heavy handed by the end of the amber spyglass...

Ok finished Knife and was a bit dissapointed. Yet another trilogy that falls victim to the 'middle book syndrome'. I know the irony in the way it finishes, but seems far too dramatic. Will pick up Spyglass tomorrow.
