Fellow guitar geeks...

Led Zepelin was one of the most derivative bands on the planet, copping and outright stealing from blues and jazz musicians (as you said, like many British bands of the day).
(emphasis mine)

Mmmm, I wouldn't go that far, especially when you consider what was going on with American bands. Like, white artists just doing songs by their black contemporaries.

Zep at least brought something new to the table ephemera they dusted off old stuff- volume, swagger...Eastern chord progressions...Satan.

Most drummers will tell you that they were influenced by somebody else, usually to the point of downright lifting certain riffs. I know I've said it before, but I learned the Peter Criss "God of Thunder" solo, and when my wife heard it coming from the TV while washing the dishes yelled in from the kitchen, "hey, isn't that your solo?"
:D

Yeah straight four on the bass while filling on the toms, it kind of stuck. Porcaro had another drummer to steal from too, his dad - Joe was a jazz drummer from way back and played with a lot of the jazz combos in the 50s and 60s.

As for the double-stroke roll, being 128th notes, frankly there are a lot more interesting patterns than a straight buzz roll at 128, you just have to practice... a lot. :)
