Fellow player fudging rolls

The open Dice Pit is the one and only. It's easy to ask for,; goes 'it'll add lots of fun to play and help everyone to work as a party if we share one of the most important parts of the game in the moment when outcomes are decided. Group tension and sharing the good and the bad exactly when it happens.

OK so I'm tired and it could be said a lot better: the shared, open roll is the heartbeat of what makes our RPGs unique.

I'd be more worried about the fact that you thought saying anything at all about the cheating than the cheating itself, unless you just think that's embarassment. Most of the people that I have known (note anecdotal, personal experience here) that have so cheated after reaching adulthood--also cheated at more serious things. Most of these folks seemed to cheat at games as a form of practice. (I got that as a straight answer from several such.)

Point being, if he thinks that this stuff just doesn't matter, then it isn't even "cheating" to him. So all you have to do is convey to him why it matters to you, and it will gradually fix itself. OTOH, if he cheats because he is generally dishonest, then might as well accept that it will continue in some form, barring methods to make it impossible or his expulsion from the group.

Fortunately, in our current group, we roll everything in the open. Otherwise, people would forget things that applied and miss when they should have hit ... :)

Next time he does it, look him like that-->:erm: and say to him "Dude..." but don't let anyone else really understand why you said it (cover it up somehow.... "nothing, ill tell you later" should work).

After that, every time he tries to cheat, you will give him this look -->

If he doesn't cut it out, ask everyone if they would like to play with cards instead of dice.

If he keeps going on...wtf :uhoh:

My 1e character stats of 18/99 18 18 17 18 16 were TOTALLY LEGIT! Honest!
Well, that's obvious. If you had been cheating, that Strength score would be 18/00.

You could bring a dice tray to the game after obtaining approval from the GM.

If only rolls inside the tray count, then it solves a lot of dice cheating issues, abusive pre-rolling, etc...

You can place the tray close to the GM, who can read the result then give back the dice to the players once the results of the roll is figured. Outrageous modifier on a dice rolls are also more obvious this way!

It then becomes a tool for the GM to pace the action.

Also if you are playing with mini or tokens on a map, it's much safer to roll in a tray.

This is an excellent idea. For extra nonconfrontational sneakiness, you could deliberately send several of your own die rolls off the table, and then use that as a reason for using the tray.

Take the guy aside.

"Hey, I hate to be nosy, but I want to ask you something. Do you normally wear glasses? I'm asking because I saw you roll a 7 the other night and called it a 17. Which was fine this time around, but it would be a shame if it went the other way, right? I've actually switched to using only high-contrast dice, like black numbers on light colors, or light numbers on dark."

This is nearly an exact quote from a former high school buddy of mine when he showed up to a Dragonlance game with his own PC (we were using the pregens - I was Raistlin). Amazingly his PC did terrible and died at 2nd level.

As for the kids they cheat at most games they play, and then when they're found out sulk- throw the dice, stomp off, call each other names and are back at the table with a glass of squash in under four minutes.

A glass of..... SQUASH? (something gross just came up and splashed the back of my throat...)
