Festival of Halina (Orsal Judging)

Eventualy, the guards escort Sunny to the Sheriff's office, where two wait outside. Sunny is seated in a chair, where he is warned against resisting. Sunny looks rather dejected over this situation though, and does appear to have any ambition of moving.

When the Sherrif and Mayor see the rest of you enter the room they offer you a seat with an easy view of Sunny. "Are any of you here to represent and advise him?" the Sheriff asks. The Mayor simply looks somewhat annoyed and aggitated, though much less so than earlier.

"Yes, we are sir" Elise sits stifly in her chair, going over what few facts she know, and hoping for more "Could you tell use the exact charges. sir?"

"Well," says the Sheriff to Lasair's comments, "if he's found guilting of ... relations... with out proper concent, then he is lible to a fine payed to the city and victem, or potential jail time. Or, sometimes another compromise can be worked out."

"That is understandable. If he did this without her consent, he deserves what he gets. I am more concerned with what happens if she did give consent."

The Sheriff waves the Mayor quiet before he can intercede, and then replies "Well, at her age, she needs to be either married or have the concent of her parents, neither of which were the case." The Mayor harumphs at this.

Sunny looks like he was about to pipe in, but decides he best not stick his foot in his mouth again.

The Mayor, upset says "And it wasn't just once either. I suspected she was out late the past two nights, and I caught her last night. Her dress was askew, hair a mess, and I know what someone looks like after... that."

The Sheriff continues "We have several witnesses that place him with her, including some who saw him run off with her and come back in a similar state. And you heard his statement earlier."

The Sheriff looks at the party "Would you like to talk to him first before we continue? He doesn't look like he is in the mood to talk with us right now."

"She only needs to be married?" Lasair ponders to herself and perhaps Elise, who is nearby, "Well then the solution is simple. He can take her as a wife, recovering some of his zhal while at the same time creating an alliance with the Clan Chief and Holdmistress of the Covington."

"The way for the mayor to retain his vhal while keeping the matter from all would have been to simply drop it while subtly indicating that he knew of the crime, proving himself the better man while simultaneously causing great shame for Sunny."
With a flash of insight, Oirhandir realized this woman's customs were closer to his own than those of other men. At least, he thought, in the manner of the way of how women and men deal with each other. "Ah", he replied to her, "that is the difference. One of your own would know shame, were he in Sunny's position. But in these lands, even a man who had deliberately harmed the daughter would think that he had the upper hand and that the mayor was a fool, so long as the mayor took no action. Among your own, a lady may hold and defend her-- (here he paused, once again searching for one of Lasair's peculiar words) --Vhal in her own right. But here, it is the custom for a man known to the lady to perform this task. In this case, the mayor must be that man. Also, he must both take action and keep concealed that the purpose for the action was that he failed to protect one of his own family, even though that failure was no fault of his own, or else he will lose Vhal. A difficult spot to be in", the bard added.

"So, even if by your customs you have no zij, it would be appropriate to at least acknowledge the mayor's discomfort, by the customs of this land. Doing so would not diminish you in the eyes of anyone here. But I feel I have already counseled you overlong on the ways of this land, truly, you will do as your heart demands and perhaps that is for the best." The elf continued to march behind the guards, hoping that the gravity of the situation was becoming apparent to Sunny.

"How peculiar...that women here are not seen as capable of holding their own vhal...Treating a woman in such a way in my land is a far greater crime than engaging in passion with consent...far greater. In fact, it is so terrible to even ponder such a thing that I now know that I must leave this barbaric place before my zhal has a chance to become at issue, lest I be degraded in such a way...But as you say, it is best to acknowledge the mayor' position."

*Lasair turns to the mayor.*

"I have been told by my comrade that your strange customs have forced you into your current undesirable position. Thus, I acknowledge your discomfort and anger as being rooted in your peculiar zhal, and thus your stance to desire withholding information within your right."
