Festival of Halina (Orsal Judging)

"You heard him--he seems to be ignorant of his crime, rather than lying, and I do not know of the codes here, but I would think you owe at least the man who you are about to arrest a list of the charges before you bring him into your custody? Or can you just arrest people here without a petition of habeus corpus? You don't have to tell me the crime if you don't want, but at least tell Sunny and let me ask him if he is guilty. If so, sir, then I will be on your side in this and I will not bother you to bring the crime into the open."

The mayor, frustrated with the relentless questioning, flies into a rage, tears begging to stream down his face "Fine, you want everyone to know, then fine. This man here violated my daughter. Happy now? He wasn't, because he's kept doing it night after night. Are you satisfied now? Or do I have to bring my daughter out here and have him demonstrate it? I'm sure he'd be happy to oblige that."

Sunny goes a bit pale at hearing this.

*Hearing this, Lasair boils with fury, as if the kitten she had been protecting had just turned into a venomous serpent and struck at her chest, feeling her own vhal melting away as she speaks in defense of one so honourless. She rounds on Sunny.*

"Sunny, is this true? How could you do such a thing! Forcing yourself on a woman without her consent? If so, I am ashamed to know such a...a...agrahlsp!"

Sunny blurts out "She was willing! And she enjoyed it too!" before he realizes what he said and blushes furriously.

The Mayor, angry now, says "She's just a child, barely 16, how could you?" he catches himself and says "Look, let's all head to the Sheriff's office. We can deal with this all there."

No longer willing to pause any longer, he heads to the office with Sunny, the Guards, the Sheriff, and a mildly befuddled Troi.

"She was willing? What's the problem then?" Lasair wonders, largely to herself, "Still, if it is a crime in this area, and one to him, and he has committed it, then he has zij to pay the price."

*She allows the guards to take Sunny away, but she calls out:*

"Troi, if there's a break in this, could you please inform me of the relative severity of Sunny's sentence? If it is something far beyond his zij, then I must think on this matter further. Thank you, and sorry for any inconvenience."

Troi responds "Well, I'm kind of working for the city, perhaps you should come and represent him as the Mayor offered. But I'll try to do what I can."

Fang gets a slightly concerned look on his face and sets off mumbling something about Hellen, Violating, and .. Poopers?

"Well, ummm, I sort of feel like I'm not welcome here any more after that...I don't want to bother the mayor more, especially since Sunny is guilty and I brought about all that distress...I just want to find out if they are going to execute him or castrate him or something that would be overly harsh...I guess if you think it is best, that I can come, but I don't exactly know how judicial process works in this society..."

Oirhandir was stunned at this turn of events. Sunny and the mayor's daughter? Apparently, it was all too true, becuase Sunny even admitted it. But then he thought, "That might account for the first night, when he came back to camp all disheveled and smiling. But he's spent most of the evenings since then sleeping off too much ale, not seeing some new lover."

The elf wondered, could they both be lying? And if so, why? It made no sense.

He wished the strange human woman would hold her tongue. Didn't she realize that she was doing as much harm as good? There was nothing that they learned here that they couldn't have learned at the sheriff's, and without expending so much precious goodwill in the process. At least she hadn't talked all of them into handcuffs.

Well, this had certainly ruined his plans for a pleasant day with Scarlet. But it seemed that the only reasonable thing to do was to accompany Sunny and to try to work things out for the best, that is, the best for all. There were misunderstandings, that he was sure of, but he knew not precisely who had misunderstood what. Oirhandir wondered just what exactly Sunny would be charged with. He also wondered how the lad felt about marriage.

It was going to be an interesting day.
