Anime fans all have frightening memories of the last time a Final Fantasy film hit theater screens in the United States. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was a massively promoted bomb in the United States but the name recognition value of the Final Fantasy series is still one of the strongest among fans of Japanese pop culture. Square Enix confirmed this week that the DVD release date for Final Fantasy: Advent Children has been pushed back to January 10, 2006 so that the film could have a possible limited theatrical release. No word yet on which theaters will run the film or if it will actually show up on the silver screen but it's a fair assumption that, if it does happen, it will screen in Los Angeles and possibly New York. Stay tuned - IGN Anime Report will publish the dates as soon as they're available.

Well, this is certainly disappointing. Like many people, I've already snagged a subtitled version off the internet, but I really wanted to get the domestic release also; mostly because that seems to be the only way we'll also get the "Last Order" anime OVA that was included in the Japanese release. Ah well, January 10 isn't that far away.

I can wait :)

This movie looks like it will be worth the wait. And who knows, maybe something cool will happen if they release it in limited theaters, and maybe a lot of people will go see it.

From the trailers this looks like the Final Fantasy I WANT to see in the theater.

Unlicensed for distribution, so it's still available at http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/676.html

The hyperlink tag didn't work.

Wasn't the Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within pretty much a bomb everywhere? Mostly because as near as I could tell from watching it, it had nothing to do with any FF game, even in "spirit". And it had Alec Baldwin in it, whose career even at the time was definitely on the way down.

The new one seems to solve all those problems (unless they snuck a Baldwin into it while I wasn't looking). So I think it does make sense to try for a theatrical release (though perhaps not at the expense of missing Christmas...).

Wow. That really strikes me as a mistake. I've been hearing from a number of friends that they were looking forward to getting Advent Children for Xmas - even though just about every single one of them had downloaded it, subtitled, from the internet.

On the other hand, considering what i've seen of it, this film on a big screen would really be an exciting thing to see...

Uzumaki, just curious, are you having any problems with the downloaded file? I finished getting the full file from the torrent, but it won't play now. Any player I try to play it in says it's encountered an error and turns itself off. According to GSpot (the media file doctor program), it couldn't find a suitable codec.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated, as I'd like to be able to watch this now that I've downloaded it.
