Could someone who understands the new Face/Reach rules please 'splain it better to me than the stupid book. The way I'm reading it is if you have a face of 10' you take up a 10 foot square and you have the same reach, you effectively can take up 90 squares? That just don't add up! Or the front of you takes up 10 feet?

Me no understand.

Here's how I understand it.

If a creature has a 10-foot face/reach, that means that it occupies and controls a 10 x 10 area. Nothing can enter that space, as it fills it, either by sheer mass (like a gelatinous cube) or by moving around in it. It also means that it can attack creatures up to 10 feet away, and it threatens an area 10 feet in all directions.

Make sense?

Thats how I understand it as well. But thats a lot of space don't you think?

If a monster has 10' face and a 10' reach, the map looks like this:

Code:
........
..tttt..
.tttttt.
.ttMMtt.
.ttMMtt.
.tttttt.
..tttt..
........
. are empty squares.
t are spaces the monster threatens, and can attack into.
M are the spaces the monster actually occupies.

Does this answer your question?

Creatures are assumed to be moving around inside their controlled area.

Consider that a halfling controls an entire 5' space, even though his body is far smaller than that. And he can attack creatures 5' away in all directions, though he surely does not have arms that long.

So then my next question would be, can the opponent move within the monsters controlled area? Or is that 10' space considered the monster? I would assume so.

I don't think the book is stupid.

Neither do I. The book is actually very well done. It was more of an expression to convey frustration, get it? Got anything to contribute to the actual question?

There isn't much to contribute. All face values are square now, so 10'/10' is the same as 10' by 10'/ 10' was before. What's the problem?

That 10' space "is the monster." If you can attack any of those four squares, you're attacking the monster.

It's possible to move through that area in certain cases, but you usually can't just stroll in with normal movement. (In general, you need to have your own space all to yourself; that's just the minimum elbow room you need for fighting effectively.)

With a successful Tumble check, you can move through the area and come out the other side. Ditto if the monster lets you past.

If you successfully grapple the monster, you move into its area, and wind up sharing one of its squares. (Visualize a little kid trying to wrestle an adult.) There are some special rules about what you can and can't do while grappling.
