Fighter Feats Character Creation

Twiddle

First Post
If I wanted to create a fighter who was full out attack what feats should I take. Iv decided Im going to go strate fighter untill something pops up in a mod and Ill just change my fighter accordingly (not change stats, feats, etc. just like if "join the army came up, Id join") Im just beginning DND and I want my fighter to be full out attack, not like a barbarian, but just does a lot of damage and has a pretty good ac.

Iv picked these stats:

Str 16
Dex 16
Con 14
Int 10
Cha 8
Wis 8

Feats:

Weapon Focus
*Greatsword

Power Attack

Mounted Combat

Ride By Attack

Spirited Charge

I bought a Greatsword, long bow, and a sap (play in Ket murdering-jail, Greyhawk), a Warhorse, military saddle, saddlebags, torches, waterskins, backpack.
I know I might be over my spending cost but Iv played a couple mods to make up for it.
*I know I cant change my character right now but I could always remake him to my liking with w.e you suggest
This is a Greyhawk character

ASAP I will upgrade the greatsword to adamantine

I was considerering going Dodge Mobility Spring Attack because someone said that you get a good bonus with spring attack but I dont see whats good about it. I realize I shouldn't depend on a warhorse at the moment but it seems the easiest way to play my character while doing a goodly amount of damage
Any Help? --First five feats you suggest and anymore you think is good for me would be nice

P.s. I hope this is the right spot to post this

If you're going full plate, i'd highly suggest swapping your Dex score with Con if you can. As is, i'd recommend Chain Shirt or such to keep your speed up to max for first level.

I have to say though, I like the idea of a mobile fighter, though i'm not sure if completing the tree and snagging Whirlwind Attack is worth it.

As for feats, i'm going to recommend what I can based on my experience, as i've never played with mounts before:

Weapon Focus: Greatsword

Power Attack

Cleave

Improved Initiative

And possible Iron Will, or Lightning Reflexes to somewhat help your poor other 2 saves.

That low wisdom is really going to hurt will saves. A 1st level sleep spell could bring you down easily (assuming your between 1st and 4th levels), a later own dominate person and hold person spells will easily affect you so I recommend picking up iron will at some point to boost your will saves.
Also if you're going to be in dungeons alot mounts aren't too good, I'd recommend talking to your DM before taking mounted combat.
As for other feats I highly recommend taking cleave, power attack, improved initiative weapon focus and weapon specialization. Iron will with that low of a wisdom is almost a must have feat that I'd definitley take at some point between levels 1 and 6.

BTW Spring attack is awesome against foes who's full attack actions would normally destroy you (such as giants and dragons) or so that you don't waste movement after killing an opponenet.

yea for that dungeon comment I agree fully. Im just wondering does spring attack give any bonus' to power attack or extra damage in general?

I personally don't think spirited charge is worth it at lower levels. You trade a lot of versatility for a feat which is very powerful 10% of the time (i.e., when you happen to be mounted in a big field where you can charge in a straight line). Mounted combat and ride by attack make you significantly superior to any lesser or non mounted opponent anyways; spirited charge is just the icing on the cake.

You might be better off with cleave. Cleave can be combined with a ride by attack (lop off the heads of two orcs at once), and you've already invested in power attack. Improved Overrun or Bullrush could also be handy, but they are less versatile.

At fourth fighter level I'd plan on snagging weapon specialization; otherwise, investing in weapon focus isn't really worth it.

If you want to increase your AC, "exotic weapon proficiency Bastard Sword" might be a better choice than the greatsword path; you give up some damage but can use a shield to gain defensive potential in a tight spot. A tower shield might be particularly nice to protect you from some spell affects and missile attacks.

As far as equipment goes, potions of enlarge person could be a good investment. When you upgrade those big weapons to the next size category, the damage gets huge; it also helps a lot when bullrushing or overruning.

You also want to get your strength to 14 or 18 for maximum efficiency; remember, with a two handed weapon your strength bonus to damage is multiplied by 1.5, so a bonus of +2, +4, +6, etc is optimal.

Oh sorry, well at the moment hes lvl 3 :\
Ill consider losing spirited charge but I do love that ability and I wont take mobility or spring attack so make space for it later on,

Im planning on taking specialization instead of mobility so that works pretty good

Iv made my character into a guy like "Shields are for pussies" so I guess that cancels that, and I like the versatility that goes with the 16 str/dex and upping strength to 18 would just take away from alot so Im planning on getting a stat booster even if its expensive

I wouldn´t worry about the will save. Fighter will saves simply suck, and your allies should attempt to prepare spells to help you there - (Magic Circle against Evil or Protectim from Evil centered on you will make issuing commands with Dominate spells impossible. The spell "Remove fear" can take care of that problem...)

If you want some combat mobility, consider the Run feat. It allows you to run without any penalties (though enemies targeting you with ranged attacks still do), and you gain a bonus to running jumps, which can be nice - on top of that, you can also run faster than normal. This will not entirely negate your speed losses due to armor (until you get your Mithral Breastplate), but it will help considerably.

If you used a point buy method, ensure that one of your scores (preferably the highest) was uneven so you can even it out with the 1st bonus ability point.

Unfortunately, you´re not smart enough to learn improved trip or combat expertise(this is a great way to improve your damage and reduce the damage you take). This also limits the feats available (by the way: No whirlwind attack!) to you, so taking mounted combat feats isn´t that bad...
