Fighter Multiclass

Drakard

Not a min/maxer, but just trying to think outside the box, not sure if this was already addressed or not.

Alright, Combat Challenge states that the fighter, reguardless of if he misses or hits a target will get that target marked. So if you use a burst ability you have the opportunity to mark all those targets you swing at, since it just states misses or hits (and doesnt say with a specific type of attack ie; Melee Basic Attack).

So, if you are a fighter who has multiclassed with say an Invoker. And you take on some of their encounters that "attack" multiply targets, can you in essence mark those in the burst?

Its just an attack, granted its not a melee fighter based attack, but it doesnt have stated in the Combat Challenge what type of attack you need to use. And since you are a main class fighter you still have that Challenge ability.

Your thoughts ;)

In a word, yes.

Dragonborn Fighters are quite common for that reason .. dragon breath marks everyone as a minor action.

It's for that reason (and the minion killing ability) that I love my acidic Dragonbreath!

However, this isn't always the advantage it sounds like. Sure, you could MC Invoker and mark everyone in something like an Area Burst 3...but then that also means that all those guys are now going to want to come after YOU. There is such a thing as marking too much.

Also, the vast majority of the fighter's stickiness only works within melee range. Sure, you can give everyone a -2 to attack anyone who isn't you, the main reason people attack fighters is because there's also the threat of being pushed, given additional penalties, and so on which only occur if the marked target is within melee range. In many cases, monsters will just suck up the -2 to attack and go after the squishy wizard.

That's why there is that paragon tier feat that increases the mark penalty to -3
