Fighter Revision

Something I've been thinking about is this:

Fighter: as PHB, except as noted here.
At every odd level, you gain a Weapon feat for which you qualify.
At every even level, you gain a Style feat for which you qualify.

Weapon Feats are: Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization, Improved Critical, Greater Weapon Focus, Greater Weapon Spec. -- any Feat that applies to only one specific type of weapon.

Style Feats are: every Fighter bonus Feat that's not a "Weapon Feat".

This slightly weakens the first levels of Fighter, while empowering later levels.

The only feat it actually removes from other classes is Improved Critical, which I really think is an odd feat as-written-- why does it not, at least, require Weapon Focus in the weapon it applies to?

Ah, I see. Ok, that's a little different then, as it actually makes fighters able to specialize in multiple weapons in a decent way. :)

One idea i am (recently) toying with is giving fighters soemthing akin to Rangers weapon style groups. But, instead of feats, they gain +to attack and damage - which is stackable with weapon focuses/specs (for which i use weapon groups) So, to outline a few weapon styles:

Infantry: + to attack/damage with melee weapons. +1/1 @ 5th, +2/2 @11th, +3/3 @ 17th.
Archer: + to attack/damage with missile weapons. +1/1 @ 5th, +2/2 @11th, +3/3 @ 17th.
Cavalryman + to attack/damage while mounted. +1/1 @ 5th, +2/2 @11th, +3/3 @ 17th.
. . .

etc.

what do you folks think of my idea? does it have any merit? any balance issues? thoughts?

Ive always thought fighters were fine as is, and to encourage high level straight fighters there should be an extension of teh weapon speclization feat chain, on up to like 18th level. HIgh Mastery and Grand Mastery and such. I made up some feats for it I have here somewhere...

Well, I don't know about "folks", but I like it. I'm not sure it'd be enough to keep a Fighter on the straight and narrow, but maybe, just maybe. . .

Yes. . .? :)

morning Aus Snow.

I am actually kinda surprized that i got a "hey, that's a neat idea" so quickly. It's just Something that came out of my head when i should have been focusing on sinusoids in pre-calc . . . (okay, does that NOT sound like a japanese squid monster to people here?). Anyways, you could expand on that list a bit > there are throwing weapons too, etc etc. You could do it by the weapon group system, if you are an adhereant in that. Anyways, i shall wait for more feedback before getting into the met and gravy of this.

Hm, I think it makes more sense as it is. More in line with the standard rules, I guess. Just my 2c.

The 'standard rules?' Take Improved Critical. It _doubles_ the crit range of the weapon in question. It doesn't add +1 to the crit range, which would favor axe-like weapons over sword-like weapons, and which would mirror adding +1 to the critical multiplier rather than doubling the additional damage from a crit.

Being in line with the standard rules in that sense would probably mean doubling the additional damage inflicted on a crit, not increasing it by a percentage that is variable depending on the base damage.

Of course, there are other considerations to make as well -- the presence of ×5 or even ×7 crits could make the combat system extremely volatile, which isn't necessarily good for the PCs. But at 20th level, all bets are off anyway.

My point simply is that you need improved critical to stay as it is, if you do want a semblance of game balance. That's all. [end=threadjack]

Back to fighters. I don't think giving out extra feats is the answer to fighters. He is the leader in feats - no need to give him even more. My copy of Iron Heroes is finally in, so i am going to pick it up ASAP (although, it's Remembrance Day here is canuck-land, so the stores are closed) and i can't wait to see what they have for a fighter class (and to see how my berserker class in the en world threads stands up against Monte's berserker). Anyways, When i get that book, i'll foreward some more ideas, but for now, i am liking my "combat style" idea pretty well as a possible revision. Also check out my Alt. Feat Concept page, it has some interesting ideas to help fighters at higher levels (as in better feat selection).

Cheers
