Indeed.

One of the only reasons they survived was the fellows cowardly nature. He was so afraid of entering into physical combat he sent his wounded lackies into battle first, where they got slaughtered. Then he didn't have anybody to flank with to get his sneak attack.

In the end, one of the characters was bleeding to death and the other was almost dead. The combat came down to a "whoever hits the other guy next, wins" situation.

Honestly, that's one of the reasons I had the captain flee. I didn't expect them to give chase. I didn't expect the ranger to roll so darn well on his track checks. Sometimes players are just too persistant.

I gave them some nice treasure though.

Even then they were lucky, for the guy had probably more HP than the two combined.

But yes, sometimes the players do things they aren't supposed to do - and succeed. A DM of mine has found out that very important fact: Player's can kill in seconds what you counted on having around for several minutes. :D (In this case a trumpet archon that fell to a Death Attack).
