Final Fantasy XI MMORPG on 10/28

EDIT from my original post:

Ive finally been grouping with Japanese players. Has anyone else? It is a trippy experience to say the least, but fun. Tonight I was in the most organized group I have ever been in with 3 japanese players , me an american, and 2 french canadians.

Despite the often comical attempts at small talk, I gained 2 levels hunting in the canyons and mountains outside Windurst. Our tarutaru paladin (Japanese) had macros to ID enemies, coordinate special atacks, get heals etc.. She had her stuff together, and businesslike in battle. I dont think Ive played with anyone so nice yet so "in charge". It was quite an experience as our shorties party tore thru the land. Her favorite phrase was "wow" for a wide range of situations. But we were able to communicate key concepts and had a few hours fun.

I even learned a new word omedesu- thats great- for when you level.

I've only partied with around 3-4 Japanese players so far... half of them had good enugh english that things ran very smoothly, and while there may have been a little lost in the general chat amoung the party once combat started things went fine (it helps that most Japanese players my level are fairly expirenced and leveling their advanced/sub jobs, it also helps that most english players on Midguardsormr at my level had high level beta chars).

The ones that didn't speak any english were quite a bit harder to get things working with, in particuallar I had a 19th monk who needed to be out puller because she was the highest level in the party and the only one who could check pugils and tell us if they were IT or VT to her. But even that wasn't too bad with the translator after we got things down.

I just took a look at the main site, and I am SO going to go for this game.

If only we could convince them to make an ENWorld server.

So, what server is everyone on? When I eventually pick it up and make my char, I'd like to be on a server with some of you guys.

Riiiiight... So then the 10 of us could own an empty server with no economy...

Odin... I'd offer you a worldpass, but I'm broke at the moment (Just bought armour and a sword for next level)

So, for those interested in PS2 play, how do you chat with others? Through a headset, or do you hook a keyboard to the ps2 somehow?

Thanks,

DM2

You hook up a keyboard. The PS2 has a pair of USB ports up front, and various manufacturers have stepped in to sell keyboards for the PS2. Logitech is the most notable of the bunch, since they offer a package that has an elongated controller that holds a compact, detachable keyboard in the middle (the keyboard plugs into the USB ports, the controller plugs into the standard ports). Supposed to take a little getting used to, but it's good solution that doesn't have you switching between input devices to move a character or type a message. BTW, the keyboard portion is also available separately.

Hey guys, anyone know what "AF" stands for? On a FFXI messageboard a lot of people compare the quality of various characters "AF"'s, but for the life of me I have no idea what they're talking about. Some special armor perhaps?

If im not mistaken it refers to artifacts, special weapons or armor used by a particular class, usually gotten iI think thru quests.
