Final Fantasy XI MMORPG on 10/28

I haven't liked a FF since 7,(oh and tactics) so I'm not to sure about this one. I'll wait and see I guess.
If you don't like MMORPG's there is a good chance that you won't like FFXI. I've played a few and while FFXI does many things well it is still basically a glorified chat room with swords and spells (as are pretty much all MMORPGs).

It is a fun game if you can get into it and have some time to devote. It is much better playing with others in the party even though the single-player experience doesn't suck and is still needed to gain decent amounts of XP so you can level up. The graphics are fantastic and the game has the best use of a campaign world that I have seen yet - dying actually matters. There are game goals to strive for such as getting the best equipment or finishing all the quests and it certainly feels like Final Fantasy, which is a good thing.

The whole "random server" (AKA, we hate friendships!) bit basicly killed any interest I have in buying this game.

shame. I was looking forward to it.

Got my copy and updating installing now. Like the interface, hate the registration process (seems a bit long).

Woe betide anyone trying to play with 56k -itd take forever to do the updates.

Woo hoo! ready to play...

I echo Tsyr's displeasure. What a pain in the freakin' ass. I still may give it a shot, though.

I think the majority of the complaints going round (PA's a spectacular example) against random distribution are hyperbole.
It supposedly should take no more than a day or so to raise enough money to bring in 5 friends with World Passes. All the "Woe betide us!! Prithee all is lost! jibber jabber seems to be complaining for the sake of complaining.. at a (understandably silly) feature that is easily overcome in rapid fashion.

Beyond that.. I'm looking forward to trying this one out, interacting with an entirely different culture (japan's... no server segregation for us USers), and fiddling around in the vana'diel.

Japanese Player: Are you American?
American Player: Um, no, I'm Canadian.

Heh.

Take care,

While I agree the comic and corresponding news post blew the issue out of proportion, it's still an inconvenience, and a rather dumb one. I shouldn't have to waste "a day or so" discussing amongst others to decide what server to play on, finding out where the hell all my friends wind up, and consequently devoting time trying to gather resources just so I can enjoy a game with some pals, each of which, myself included, just coughed up $50 to purchase.

Well, since it's completely random, if you want, ya can just keep making the same character over and over until you get in the correct server.. I bounced from Alexander to CaitSith to Pandemonium (where I'm hoping to stay)... Not really a fix, given it's a 1 in 30 or so shot of getting the server you want, but it is cheaper and probably faster than getting a world pass.

I agree that it's annoying and unnecessary.. I'm not sure exactly what the reasoning is behind it.

The thing that's really worrisome is the current problems many people are having with their installation processes. Disc two is messing up for a lot of people. Not cool

How long is the alleged "unskippable" cutscene introduction? It's length may hamper the delete-until-you-get-your-server method of character creation.

I think the opening intro is about 30 secs to under a minute. Didnt seem that long, I created a character 4 times to experiment. After vowing to be an elvaan, I finally settled on a Tarutaru white mage named Kalpakolindo-the intro and NPC in Windurst were funnier than the others IMHO.

For world pass comparisons, Im on Odin, and a world pass I believe costs 2400 gil or so.
