Final Fantasy XI MMORPG on 10/28

Hmmm. I havn't had much time to play it today, so I really have no impressions on the gameplay yet, but a few early thoughts.

  • Graphics -- More than anything else, I have to say this: The graphics in this game are amazing. Oh, sure... The textures might not be the highest res ever, and the partical effects are at times strangely lacking (On water falls, for example)... But overall, they WORK, in a way that no MMORPG since Everquest's has. They feel comfortable, and friendly... Not in a cartoony way, but in a nice, "You want to be here" sort of way. And better yet, they run great on my aged system (1 ghz 512 ram GeForce 3). The little touch that you can run the interface at a different res than the game world is a GREAT one, and one I expect to see more of in MMORPG's in the future.
  • Interface -- Awkward, at least thus far. Particularly the interface for logging in, but in game too... I keep bringing up menus I didn't want just doing things like walking around. I expect this to get better with time though.
  • Character Limit -- This sucks. I want to make more than one character... I want a Mithra ninja, a Elvaan Samurai, and a Hume Summoner... So I'm gonna be paying more money.

There is something kinda soothing about the graphics even though like you said it isnt cutting edge. I cant put my finger on it.

The interface definately betrays its console influence. I mean, how many handles, names and passwords do I need to log on. And it took me 3 days to figure out the friend list thing, but its not all that bad once u get the hang of it. The play online FFXI communication/message/chat are well integrated.

If u are in game, especially if youre a caster, use the macros. You cannot mouse target anything with menus open. The macros work wonderfully well, especially if youre a white or red mage.

Im on Odin. Id offer a world pass but Im broke- been spending my time wandering around. Im a level 6 Tarutaru white mage named Kalpakolindo in Windurst if you matriculate over there.

Im no expert but I have the hang of a few quests. Holler if u make it over.

Mmmmm.

This thread is making it difficult for me to wait until January for my PS2 copy to come in. I'd buy the PC version but I don't like playing games on my PC and I'm getting a free PS2 version. Bittersweet... kinda

The Pc version is much more pretty ..LOL. Youre getting a free copy? I though beta just got the HD free-thats pretty sweet.

Tsyr- looking into the world pass, Im about 300 gil short which should be easy to obtain it costs 1300 or so gil. If you want I collect the gil and get you a pass to avoid the tedium of trying to go thru 30 servers. Just let me know.

Yeah, the PC version does look better but I'd need to buy a new videocard to really take advantage of it. Plus, I prefer console games - less bugs.

And yeah, I thought that I was just getting a free HD because I was in the beta but the last email from Square said that it would be preloaded with FFXI, so that works for me. :)

But 2 months is a long time for a big FF fan to wait. I may crack...

Look at it this way - you and a friend will be able to play in the same house/apartment/cardboard box, and possibly even in the same room!

If you wouldn't mind, that would be great.

I use tsyr for my loging/handl/whatever they call it there too

Ok I think I have enough got to run to heavens tower. Ill try to do it before I go to sleep.

EDIT: I got the pass and emailed the number pass thingee to your pol.com email addy. Which I hope is your handle @pol.com

Let me know if it doesnt work.

Also, depending on how many charcaters Tsyr has any other EnWorlders can move here-the pass is good for about 6 days or so I think 167 hours. Just email me at Alcareru@pol.com if I dont check these boards.

Hah, been playing so recently much I haven't checked into this thread in a while.

For most of the beta people the world passes have been a non issue, Midguardsormr is basically Cactuar II, for all intents and purposes. I've seen 2 people on my friends list on other servers, so far..

World pass costs are on the rise, though. The one that got me onto Mid was around 520, last I checked two days ago they were over 700 gil.

There's some very easy ways to make gil fast, though:
San d'Oria - Batwings Quest (Near the Home Point in N. San) gives you 200 gil for 2 easy to get batwings.

Windurst : The Hat Quest (Windurst Walls, hat shop) is repeatable and gives out gil real easily. It's a breeze to get around 1k in windy at level in an hour or so.

Bastok : Zerum Soot is dropped by monsters in the zerum mines, 3 pinches can be traded to a Galka on a scaffolding near the mines entrance in Bastok Mines for 150 gil.

John : I've got the PC version now (higher resoultion is soooo much better, the interface can take up around 1/2 of the screen on PS2)... planning on E-Baying the PS2 HDD & Game :D

And amazingly enough, Ive encountered no real powergamers. Possibly because the game has been out for some time Japan, maybe theres a brake on people racing to be Uber since they wont be the first. Or maybe its cuz the game is still young in North America.
Heh, most of the beta people are concentrated on my server... a Whm friend of mine just hit 20 last night, and Stephen(Highest level beta plaver, was over 55 BST, I believe) was already in Quifim early yesterday, form what I've heard. I'm doing well myself trying to keep up at a hare away from 17 with my galka war right now....
