Final Gate - Last Mythal book III - Questions and musings

RisnDevil

First Post
I just picked up and finished The Final Gate. Regardless of many people's opinion that the characters were transparent, I very much enjoyed the book(s). If you have not read at least the final book, you may wish to do so before reading further, so as not to get any spoilers.

There has been talk about a major FR book/project in the works. After reading the book, I hope it is a sourcebook for Myth Drannor. The fact that it has been (relatively) cleared and occuppied begs for a Waterdeep calibur (or better) book.

I want to see stats for Areavin. Information on the mythal. All sorts of cool fluffy crunch. A timeline for reconstructing the remaining parts. Trade guidelines. This stuff could all be cool.

Am I the only one that thinks this would be a great sourcebook?

(Question about the book: At the end of the book, Isevele has the ruler blade. Did that not disappear with the Srinshree? If so, it would have been nice to include more than just a passing, "Oh, she has it now.")

So what did Mazzy send all his friends home or what?

Well if there is a new Myth Drannor I hope it does a better job than Mysteries did. :p

Spoiler Alert

By Mazzy I am assuming you mean Malkizid? Well, Areavin collected the Gatekeepers Crystal, and first used it to unwork Sarya's (Malkizid's) tamperings with Myth Drannor's mythal. This made most of the bound demons and devils have nothing holding them in the material plane, and sent them home.

Then he sundered the Waymeet with the crystal, and in the process, pretty badly hurt (nearly killed) Malkizid.

And do you mean you hope the sourcebook does a better job than Mysteries of the Moonseas? (I do not own that book yet, so have nothing to quantify your statement with. Was the book that bad or something? And I am thinking something more along the lines of the Waterdeep book, more of a city sourcebook than a region book.)

Well, i'm not NightFall, but I was disappointed by MotMS. The book focuses on the current status of the four major cities of the Moonsea and offers canned adventures. But it does not offer any real history of the region, new magic items, new spells, new monsters, or the like. Further, the time line of the Zhent's is not advanced and there is no listed fall out of a vauge plot by the Red Wizards. And the regions outside the cities are very poorly detailed.

By I've not read the Final Gate novel. Is it any good?

A book on the new myth Drannor would be interesting.

Grumpy,

You pretty much sited the reasons I didn't like Mysteries of the Moonsea. I think this book (Final Gate) will probably be good since it appears the actual campaign stuff for FR has gone down hill pretty much. I'm hopeful Dragons of Faerun will at least have something to offer.

Risn,

Yes I meant Malkizid. Next to the Lord of the Hidden Layer, Eltab, he's the only real FR Archfiend I'm interested in. Especially since he supposed played a huge role not just in Myth Drannor's history, but also of that of the current fey'ri stuff too. Just trust me and Grumpy, Mysteries doesn't do a thing for your Moonsea campaigning. Yes I am saying if there is a new Myth Drannor sourcebook it does a much better job (like Waterdeep although considering the vast amount of source material for the city, it had a lot to live up to. Not sure the same can be said for Myth Drannor 3.5), it should be better than Mysteries of the Moonsea.

First of all, Grump, I highly recommend the book. If you enjoy FR fiction, it is very good. The story arc over the trilogy has been very enjoyable, and I think anyone who has played in FR at any point has probably wanted/attempted to do the same thing in thier game.

Although it seems to be that alot of people highly UNrecommend MotMS, I will probably pick it up because I am a bit of a completist.

And I also think that a book on Myth Drannor could easily equal Waterdeep, especially with Ed releasing the new books on the Knights of Myth Drannor soon.

Complete away Risn. I'll just say wait until it goes down in price to say half of it was costs now. Save you some cash later on.

Well that Knights of Myth Drannor book is just his way of completing the entire Realms I think. But certainly if the books gain in popularity (and when hasn't an FR book gotten SOME play), it's entirely likely.

It was a kickarse trilogy, I devoured all 3 books with great speed.

It was my understanding that Malkazid was destroyed, i dont remember him escaping...

I'd LOVE to see a new Sourcebook that detailed the Dalelands and Cormanthor and Myth Drannor that updated the campaign timeline as well..

Nearly everytime I ran an FR game the longterm campaign goal for the players was to "rescue" and rebuild Myth Drannor.

I'd love too see Aerevins stats and what template he picked up.

I'd also love to see some development of the Starelves' Realm. We got some nice detail in one of the recent sourcebooks and its inclusion in the second novel was great.

Yeah star elves are nice BK. I hope we do get some info on the new Myth Drannor. We'll have to wait and see though. I am hopeful for the new Star Elf adventure. It sounds very good.

Makilizad though could have just died and not really be dead. I mean powerful outsiders aren't exactly that killable. We'll see though. I'd hate for Mazzy to be dead. That only leave Eltab left as an FR outsider with skillz. :p

About Malkizid

SPOILER ALERT

To quote Areavin on pg 329 of The Final Gate, "...we caught Malkizid in the crystal's influence. He will not trouble us again for a long time....." To me, this implies that he is temorarily banished from Toril, like Ertu was in Salvatore's book, not dead.

And after the second book Richard Baker said that Areavin had become a celestial after his transformation (or maybe it was half-celestial?).
