Maybe we'll get an actual ending to the series from it as well. That could be very cool. I liked the first movie pretty well as I remember.

Hm, doesn't seem like it. This is from the end of the article linked to above:

So the X-Philes, and indeed a potential younger audience of converts to the adventures of Mulder and Scully, will have to settle for another movie. In the years since they have been away there has been more than enough threat of global terror, government skullduggery, conspiracy theories and fears of evil- minded scientists and dark forces at play to provide an appetite for their return.

"That's true and there's an opening for that," acknowledges Anderson before squashing any notion that the film will attempt to focus on such topical issues. "Except that I understand that the script is nothing to do with what some of the themes have been about in the past.

"It's going to be a very scary film about two characters who happen to be called Mulder and Scully. I don't think they are going to draw on any of the mythology or the conspiracy stuff, as far as I know. My understanding is that it's scary like a monster film."

One might wonder what the point of calling it X-Files is in that case :\

To be frank, there´s nothing much left of the conspiracy or mythology. I think that Chris Carter made that clear after the final season. The last "mythology-like" stuff from the final seasons was the story about the supersoldiers, but they ended it with Scullys child ( if I remember correctly).

It could be a non-mythology movie and still be good. I always thought the best episodes were the non-mythology ones anyway.

Me too.

I also think that at this point, will most people even remember most of the X-files mythology? I know I don't. The trouble with complex stuff like that, is they tend to be forgotten if the show isn't still on the air. The hard core fans will, but that probably isn't enough to support a movie.

Yep. Fans on Usenet at the time called these "Monster of the Week" episodes, and were generally considered better than the mythology ones. Of course, there's always the anticipation for mythology episodes, because folks expect to get some nugget of "the Truth" from those stories, to see how it fits together. But the MotW eps were the fun ones, and would be more likely to bring in a general audience than a mythos story.
