Finger of death question

Had a interesting encounter this last week in my game. The group encountered a Greater fire elemental and the wizard cast finger of death on it. The question we wondered can Elementals be "killed by that kind of spell". I ruled "yes" as it says on the Elemental type that there soul is combined with its lifeforce, but I made it like any outsider or Elemental or such creature that you kill the physical manifestation on this plane but it sends it "back home" if you will.

Is this correct and if not explain, please.

Nope looks fine. Elementals, as their type, are also living creatures so they qualify as viable targets for Finger of Death.

What Liquidsabre said. Any magical effect that works on a living creature works on an elemental.

This bit is only true if it is there as a result of a summoning spell, not if it has appeared as a result of planar binding, planar ally, gate or DM fiat (Why DM's buy the tiny little Italian cars though, I don't know). In those cases if you kill it, its dead.
