For what it's worth, I prefer the SS form as well. Mostly because it affects non-damage spells with energy descriptors that allow saves...
Not that I can think of any within the core rules, but it's easily a possibility for home brew spells (Numbing Cold - this spell gives creatures who fail a fortutude save a -10 enhancement penelity to speed) and I think it makes the most sense that these are affected by energy subtypes, as well (it makes sense that a fire giant has a harder time making his save againt Numbing Cold).
