Fire Elementals/Burn ability

Gotterdammerung

First Post
Hi folks. I have a game coming up on saturday and I've got some questions on how to run a Fire Elemental's burn ability.

An elder fire elemental deals 2d8+6 points of bludgeoning damage and 2d8 points of fire damage on a successful strike. It also sets the target on fire unless a reflex save DC26 is made. That target burns for 1d4 rounds unless (s)he makes a successful reflex save or spends a MEA putting it out.

Per the DMG, a character who's "on fire" takes 1d6 points of damage per round and puts the fire out on a reflex DC15 save or with a MEA.

My main question is, do I use the DMG rule's numbers for getting set on fire, or do the elemental's higher numbers supercede the standard burn rules?

I.E. a character set on fire by an elder elemental takes 2d8 points of fire damage (the amount of fire damage it does if it hits the character) per round and extinguishes it on a DC26 reflex save instead of the smaller damage and easier save.

My other question (and this might be in the books somewhere) is whether or not a character who spends the MEA to extinguish himself provokes an attack of opportunity.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Use the Elemental's numbers for damage and save DC.

Take the AoO! If standing up from prone provokes an AoO then certainly extinguishing yourself (with your hands no less) will also provoke an AoO.

Fire elemental hits and deals damage. The target takes normal damage (2d6+2 for a large elemental) and fire damage (2d6 fire for a large). They than make a saving throw at the DC specified (DC17R for a large) or catch on fire and take fire damage for d4 rds unless they extinguish that fire with an MEA. The rules (at least in the SRD) do not indicate that you get to make the secondary reflex saves to put out the fire when you catch fire from the attack of a fire elemental. In other words, it acts differently than the normal rules for catching on fire in this regard.

They do not indicate that extinguishing yourself would provoke an AoO, but it seems like a fine house rule.

Thanks for these replies. I'm definitely leaning toward provoking an attack of opportunity from the extinguish MEA. I also think, since the elemental is the sole opponent against a 6-person party, that I will go with the higher save and continued burning, with no reflex saves per round.

I'll leave the "catching on fire" rules to getting doused with flaming oil. This IS an elder elemental, after all, and it should be able to dish out the fire damage.
