Firearms resources

I'm in need of firearms to convert to Grim Tales. Mostly modern pistols and blackpowder pistols. My google-fu is too weak. I can't seem to find statistics like muzzle velocity. My searches lead me to hunting sites and online stores :(

Dave: Probably because neither book has any blackpowder weapons.

Also, Grim Tales light sidearms deal less damage than d20 modern sidearms. The damages balance out once you get to .45 ACP (roughly), but before that, the handguns are weaker than in modern. Where this gets me is the .45 vs 9mm debate, putting .45 ACP at a significant advantage over 9mm again in Grim Tales, where they run about equal in Modern.

I don't have a good link for blackpowder stuff, but there is a solid amount of info at world.guns. If an particular piece of info is missing, do a google search for the weapon's name and muzzle velocity and it should be easy to turn up.

If you find some good blackpowder info, please post the link. Thanks!

I just mentioned this in another thread, but Spycraft's Modern Arms Guide is a pretty great resource for guns. The one caveat being that Spycraft uses the Wound/Vitality points system and has armor provide DR instead of just a Defense bonus.

There was an article in a Combat Handgunner (?) magazine comparing Old West gun data with modern ones and they stacked up almost exactly the same, from the appropriate length barrel. Maybe it is online, maybe it would help you?

Not that suprising, considering the gun that "tamed the west" uses the .45 Colt Long ammo, which is still used in many revolvers today (I have two).

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

(In reference to the ammo still in use, that is.)

:)

I just guesstimated for my own blackpowder weapons. It's hard to know how to stat them because any pure "measurement" won't work properly. They're very different in function to modern weapons ... generally lower velocities, but HUGE softer-lead projectiles. So, after some google-fu I built my own weapons, but left them balanced out reasonably with modern weapons. What I ended up with was weapons who had poor range increments, and I gave them a weighted linear damage track ... usually 1dX+2, but some of the larger weapons like the musketoon had multiple dice (2d10+1) while keeping the same general 3-XX damage scale.

If you want to go the painfully technical and realistic route, I found this resource to be very useful... until I realized that I didn't care so much about the technical details:
