Fireborn

Defense chains are handled like attack chains, escept the maximum number is determined by Water instead of Fire, and characters must have at least one defense ation in a chain for each attack action of the enemy before adding attack actions of their own.

So, an enemy (with Water 5, for example) reacting to the above sequence (Dash + Ready + Sword Slash + Left Fist Strike + Kick) must have at least three defensive moves in his defensive chain. For example, he might do something like this:

Dodge + Duck + Parry + Ready + Sword Slash.

You would then subtract the Defender's successes from the attacker's. If the defender has more, you would advance along his chain, and if the attacker has more, you would advance along his.

This system means that you need a lot of sucesses. To acomplish this you also have Karma (of which the players have a lot, and most NPCs do not). After successes are rolled, both sides may spend karma for automatic successes. Once spent, the karma is gone until after the combat is over, so you need to be somewhat conservative, but no need to horde.

Dang it. between this and Capes, I think my wallet may be hurting.

I've also been moving further away from d20, either into some of the more exotic d20-based games (like mutants and masterminds) or totally non-d20 stuff (like In Nomine and Paranoia XP). One thing that I've noticed is that, in general, non-d20 books tend to have less clarity, but more fun. For example, Paranoia books are a kick to read, funny all the way through, but the rules are not very clear. Compare this to you average D&D book, and ther's quite a difference.

Anyway, thanks for pointing out Fireborn. Looks like a cool book.

Wait till I cover Burning Wheel :D

I like the lost lore book, it is rare to see a company take errata and an FAQ, print it and give it away for free. If I had it when I tried to play a month ago things would have been better. There is a module out for it as well, but I haven't gotten to read that yet; maybe tommorrow.

Exotic d20? Do you mean anything non-D&D or what? :)
Exotic d20. Like Exotic Dancing ;)

Really, I just wanted to imply something that's not 'standard' d20, but still has a whole lot in common with the d20 system, like Mutants and Masterminds.

That's probably a good way to do it, but I'm kind of brain dead while I'm at work, which means I think words like 'exotic' should be added everywhere. And there is kind of 'standard' d20, things like d20 Modern or Spycraft. Things that are very close to D&D.

Actually I think Spycraft has more in common with Star Wars d20 than D&D… but that’s just me. :)
