Firefly - I think I'm starting to get it *spoilers*

I like the look of Serenity. It lacks the sensawunda of space fantasy ships like Moya from Farscape, perhaps, but that's why I like it - it looks like the sort of thing someone with a sense of style and aesthetics would design in a world where spaceships need to be functional.

Also little touches, like the fact that the bridge extends out over the loading bay. I just think it's really distinctive and attractive.

My favorite character on the show is the feeling Mal has towards the ship.
The love and attachment he has for Serenity is so big and real you can feel it in the room next to him.
I LOVE this ship.

It is just like the Millenium Falcon in that it doesn't matter what it looks like. Its the heart inside that counts.

I want a Serenity.

The "kicked him into the intake" scene was when I first knew I'd like this show. It had style, heart, and Joss' penchant for throwing me curveballs.
I felt the same thing when he shot the guy in the Pilot episode. I was watching the DVD's, but anyways... :p

sensawunda .

One of my favorite writery reviewery sorts of words. Anyway, I agree though. The fact that Serenity is alllllll about spartan functionality and no horsepucky is what made me really like that ship. There is absolutely no room in Serenity for frippery, so when you see the goofy decorations on Kaylee's door it makes them all the more fun because they are obvious human attempts to humanize a purely functional space. And space is important to Joss (Whole episode and everything....)

According to the commentaries the vast amount of camera work on Serenity itself are all handheld. ALL of the shots of Alliance ships, on Alliance ships are stedicam. Oh and they all wear hats. Whendon had a thing where he wanted as many of the bad guys as possible wearing hats. He didn't get all of them but you never see one of the good guys in a hat ('cept in the civil war flashbacks.) :)

Jane wears a hat in Janestown. Touche. ;)

Re: hats

[sblock]Doesn't Kaylee wear a hat in Trash? When she and Jayne go out to reprogram the trash receptacle? Zoe might wear one too when she replaces Jayne after he gets shocked.[/sblock]

This is not to say the hat thing doesn't still stand. The crew tends to wear them only when the are functionally necessary. With one exception mentioned earlier.
