I did wonder why the Jericho event was considered appropriation but the Nevermore version wasn't. Maybe just because it was less egregiously exploitative?
Day of the Dead is, fundamentally, about remembering dead members of the family and incorporates colorful festivities. Nevermore's event remembers and celebrates dead members of the extended Nevermore/Outcast family - the core activity of the holiday. The Jericho Pilgrim World's event was about the colorful festivities (put on by a bunch of New England gringos) without respecting the core.
So, it's a big difference. One I could see Gomez recognizing and respecting.
