Firefox Rant

I've had repeated issues with Firefox. Flash/Shockwave, for example, absolutely won't work, no matter how many times I try to install it -- and it isn't worth my yutzing with it when IE is perfectly functional. There are quite a few links that don't work or don't work right, too.

IMO, Firefox is just as buggy as IE, overall. But, it makes some people feel better to have some sort of Jyhad. Have fun, but accept that you're on a crusade. Deal with the consequences yourself -- it isn't the developer's fault, it's your choice.

That said, I much prefer the notion of full support for standards and really hate IE-specific code. As a developer, I use standards as much as I can, but IE is my target audience at work and at home.

What's wrong with Shockwave? Works perfectly fine in my installation of Firefox....has worked fine since the first install. Maybe there's something wrong with your computer configurations.

IE is a bad browser. Period. It's insecure and non-standards compliant. Ask any tech who knows their stuff....including MCSE's. I've had MCSE's directly advise me not to use IE.....similar to their advise not to use Outlook Express.

Personally, the only problem I have with browsing is a result of my router, which is too strict, and hence causes problems with accessing certain sites.

I don't give a damn about the W3 standards.

What matters to me more is people not shoving their browser/OS preferences down my throat.

That's a non-sequitur. If everybody conforms to standards then the only preference that matters is yours. If people don't, then other peoples browser preferences start to have an impact on you.

What's wrong with Outlook? I hand't heard that advice before.

I'd heard I should avoid Outlook Express before, but AFAIK Outlook and Outlook Express have basically nothing in common but the name.

So, what programs (Dreamweaver?) would you recommend to build Web sites that create code that isn't problematic and adheres the closest to the standards?

I use Dreamweaver MX 2004 in code view mostly with design view as a preview pane. I love my Dreamweaver. The newer versions is even better!

I, however, mostly hand code everything and do not really use any automatic code generation if that makes a difference.

Notepad.exe for starters. :)

I would second notepad. There is just no substitute for understanding what is going on behind the scenes. Maybe its notepad users tho that are creating the non standard pages ??? :\

One thing that I have found between firefox and IE is that IE is much more flexible about its input which is what seems to kill firefox. For example when you set style fields in javascript like onMouseOver="parent.location='home.html'" then it works on both just fine. But if you leave out the single quotes ( ' ) then IE still takes it no problem but firefox might just ignore it. If your checking your page on IE only then that is going to be an issue.

One of the general rules about language parsing is that it should produce very strictly conformant output but accept flexible input. Im not a huge fan of IE but I have seen many situations where IE is also more conformant than firefox - mainly in CSS interpretation.

All that said, I use firefox all the time and I havent seen that many pages where I notice any issues.
