Yeah, I live in SD too, but near the beach. Its pretty nasty out here, so post-pone any vacations you might have out here for a few weeks.

Fires in three different directions from me in the San Fernando Valley part of Los Angeles, and air is clouded with smoke. Wife has the HEPA filter on full blast. Nothing threatening my home or work yet, but close friend has packed her car in preparation for evacuation, and a coworker is in the same spot with her apartment.

I saw one of these helicopters on my way in to work today (this is not my photo):

This is a cool site in Malibu that I used to like to drive past, called the Malibu Castle. It is gone now:

This is what the sky looks like about 10 miles from work:

250,000 people evacuated from San Diego County apparently, so far...

We are experiencing random power outages right now in Chatsworth California as power lines are either blown down, burned down, or shut off by the power companies to avoid an electrical fire in an area. I just saw on the news that big steal power line transformers near Six Flags Magic Mountain are in the midst of a massive fire storm.

by the way don't go snorkeling or swimming nearby if you've seen the scooper helos overhead. Every year a few poor divers or swimmers get accidentally scooped up with the water and dumped on fires.

Mistwell, I'm asurprised that you didn't upload THE BEST picture which was circulating around so. Ca: The DC-10 Fire-Retardant bomber. Watching that plane dive bomb the fire was kick ass.

Then again... that squadron of single engine fire-retardant dropping prop planes was also cool... but not as cool as that DC-10.

I know it happened in Florida during the big late 90s outbreak. Still looking for a link, but it appeared in the local newspaper. It's only the ones with the slung buckets that can do this, not the skycranes with the pumps.
