I kind of wonder if those products weren't "secret" playtests of some of the concepts going into 4e... A dual use product... A cool idea for 3e, but a way to test the concept for the future editon without leaking the future edition... Shrug.

I'm pretty sure that Iron Might was a good bit before Mearls was hired by Wizards. He did admit to rushing to finish IH since he was due to start at WotC, but BoIM had been out for awhile by then. Bo9S was definitely secret playtest material tho ;)

Eww! 3rd Party!>I still see this at least once a week even here on ENWorld, usually phrased something like "Our group always stuck to the WotC books so we would know we weren't getting any broken crap", which always makes me giggle madly. There were a number of good products released in the 3.x period, but there are also many that were less than good.

I still see multiple copies of the early 3E Mearls Adventure "Nature's Fury" in stores. A friend of mine traded a stack of them to a store or 2 that were stocking up on 3E adventures early on (I believe they were swag from GenCon or some such) and 5 years later they were still on the shelf for the most part. Not to call Mike out, it has just been one of the more persistent examples in my shopping the last 8 years.
