The first episode of The Mighty Nein, a new animated series based on Critical Role's second campaign, is available for free on YouTube. Prime Video posted the episode on YouTube in the early morning today, providing fans and newcomers alike with a free preview of its series ahead of its launch next week.

While set in the same world as The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein is a standalone series and requires no previous knowledge of either Critical Role or The Legend of Vox Machina to enjoy. The first few episodes of the new show serve as a prequel to the events of Campaign 2, providing more concrete origin stories and what the characters were up to ahead of the events of the first episode of the campaign.

You can check out the new episode below until November 16th.

After an explosion at the border, Wildemount is on the brink of War. Beauregard Lionett investigates the scene of an explosion, uncovering a sinister scheme lurking in the shadows. Meanwhile, Caleb Widogast teams up with an unlikely ally to break into a magical pet shop.

I did not like the first episode of Vox Machina and never continued that, but I enjoyed this! My favorite character so far is the monk, though I'm pretty biased (my first character was a monk).

Never watched a CR campaign and I don't really watch any live plays, but if it also works as a regular story then I'm in. :)
Yeah, I've never watched CR and the idea of spending time watching someone else play D&D doesn't really appeal to me, but I've been enjoying watching Vox Machina (is does get better after the first episode) and this show has had a good start.

For what it is worth, the basic plot and character material of the Mighty Nein campaign is actually much better, in my opinion. This show is likely going to be wild.

I think you should give Vox Machina 3 episodes. If after 3 you still bounce off, awesome. But I think the show is some of the best, most dramatic animated western fantasy we have available and is well worth the watch. Yes, there are dick jokes. But there is also real drama.

Interestingly, episode 3 catches the cartoon up to the point where people usually recommend starting the game streams, once they hit their stride.

I didn't even realize that. I was just going off my personal series rule: if im uncertain, I give it three. If I'm not hooked by then, it's not for me.

For books, it's 100 pages. For comics, it's 4 issues. For movies, it's 1/4 of the run time.

I have to admit - I was very surprised to see Johnathan Frakes in MN. I think the first episode was really good - showing the high magic the Dynasty uses with the dunamancy and the Empire's volstruckers.

I think they also did a good job of showing how the Cobalt Soul is different from 'standard' 5e monks, being more based towards knowledge and, in Beau's case, investigation.

Just watched it, very clever framing to focus in on the Luxon beacon early.

I agree. I think it's interesting to show the Beacon but be mysterious about what it exactly does. I also liked showing the effects of dunamancy with the half-rotted horses for example
The Critical Role wiki actually has summaries of all 8 episodes up, it seems they will get up to the end of the first session in episode 3, and get the cliff notes of the Zadesh sequence by end of Season...so some nice symmetry there. Also makes it seem like the Mighty Nein show may end up running longer than Vox Machina, in terms of number of seasons.

I really enjoyed this first episode. I may be subscribing again to Amazon Prime for separate reasons, but this would be a nice bonus. I only ever watched three or four episodes of the campaign and I'm feeling like I am getting a good explanaition of the story elements as we go.
