Incidentally, the polling so far on other sites is also massively favoring the 1970s-1980s Basic sets as folks' first owned product. (The sole exception is the poll for the 5e subreddits, but even there it's tied for second with the 5E starter sets.) Those boxed sets sure were something!

Sorry, I responded to the thread without even seeing the poll in the OP, so no, I missed out. But while I've been playing since 1977, I initially wasn't the DM, so I didn't actually buy anything until the release of AD&D 1e, where I purchased the starter hard backs. I'd be willing to vote if you temporarily opened, however.
