D&D 5E First time Dad DM has some questions!

You got it right. Other than the Character Advancement table on page 15 which shows you how much experience points a character needs to level up, everything you need is on the class tables. The only time that varies is when a character gets the opportunity to increase ability scores, in which case you'll need to refer back to the Ability Scores and Modifiers table on page 13.

Also, some classes, especially spellcasters, will necessitate referring to the spell lists and descriptions in Chapter 11. And, finally, if you allow the use of feats, you'll need to check out page 165 when the opportunity to select feats comes up (Level 4).

Hope that helps.

Alright all, had another session with kids. Before the session I had to work with each of them to upgrade their character sheets. I did that one on one, and honestly it took longer to move them from level 1 to 2 (we're doing the second Phandalin session) than we spent playing the next part of the campaign. In fact, I started to bog down making the changes and it turned into a slog because I wasn't sure I was doing it "right". Which brings me to my next question:

6. When characters level up, do you ONLY need to reference their "class" section in the PHB? Put another way, it seemed to me (after the second one or so that I did) that I would never really have to reference outside of the charts and info in their class section. Am I correct?

Thanks for all the help - greatly appreciated. If any DM dads (or just DMs in general) live in the Portland area and want me to buy them a free beer so I can pick their brain, that's a trade I'd gladly make ;)

Later,

I'm in Corvallis... for a couple weeks more. (My kids and wife are not.) There's a local con happening here on the 18th... info is at http://www.justagamecon.com/

Be happy to sit down with you there.

Heck, you can get in a bunch of play, too.

I started a 5e with Young Kids thread last fall here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?364748-5e-with-Young-Kids

I play with 3 of my kids (5, 8, 10) and I sort of document our experience through Lost Mine. I offer some observations about things that happened in game and how the kids responded to certain things. For instance, they started getting bored with the Lost Mine plot and were really wanting the story to tie more into their character's backgrounds. I've documented a few reactions and some cute/awesome moments. Maybe if nothing else it could inspire you a bit?

One of the best things about DMing with kids is that they are not going to care if you forget a rule or two (or ten). Even though I try to stick as close to the Basic Rules as possible, they don't care. As long as there is constancy and fun (and treasure!) then they are happy.
