well if the unicorn took some of the critters out it would make things more on par. 4 PC's put out more offence than 1 unicorn anyway.

Yes, kobolds/goblins are good fodder for 1st levels. Kobolds have the added advantage of being trapsmiths, so there's a good explanation regarding why they'd be more dangerous against a unicorn they were stalking than against a bunch of PCs who catch them flat-footed.
