Flag in The Sand!

Flag in the sand: The new web tools will probably include several different things, but most notable among them will be a web-based Character Builder that requires a DDI subscription to use for anything beyond very simple, low-level characters (Essentials versions, I'm guessing).

I think I probably got it right. We don't know about the future tools yet, but my "most notable" one is the one they've announced. I don't know yet if there will be free access to create simple, low-level characters, but I'm still guessing there will be. I'm envisioning an option to let anyone build a character by choosing:

  • Race
  • Class
  • Name
  • And that's it.
The only options in this free version will be the Essentials options (maybe adding Forgotten Kingdoms, but quite possibly not). I don't think it will let you choose powers, feats, ability scores, equipment - I'm betting it will be just a small step up from a pre-gen.

We shall see!

I'd guess that the new take on DDI will go like Essentials, mostly re-releasing and re-doing, very little new stuff. I'm already wrong, since they announced VTT, but, hey, they've announced it before...

So, before, after 2 years, we had been given: client Monster Builder, client Character Builder, on-line Compendium, and chintzy on-line Encounter Builder.

I suspect, in 2 years, we'll have: re-done on-line-only Compendium, on-line-only CB, on-line-only MB, on-line-only Encounter Builder, some kind of chinzty on-line-only map tool that aspires to be VTT but not really.
