As did I, up until Mark decided to be an utter moron. At this point though, I'm pretty sure we're supposed to hate Mark. Not that he's a bad person; for example, he covers Demitri so he won't get in trouble for going to HK. It's just that while his motives are good, he's a giant jerk.

Here's a nifty interview with David Goyer that sort of implies the same thing. Vague spoilers, so be warned. He does mention kicking up the pace in the return, which is good. The way he states it makes me think it was ABC that wanted the slower pace, but who knows.
