(sorry if this is the wrong forum, no others struck me as better)
This past weekend I decided to trade in my old MtG cards, which I had not touched in many (10?) years. The binder was literally covered in dust. I took them down to a new game store in Seattle called Gamma Ray Games. I told the guy there that I was fine with credit rather than cash, and in fact I had my eye on a particular board game ("Memoir '44", retail price $50) that I want to give my nephew for a birthday present.
I have been out of the MtG scene for many years, have no idea of the trade value of my cards, which were all 4th edition uncommons and rares. I could have looked up prices and so forth I suppose, but didn't care enough to be bothered.
A little while after I dropped off the cards the guy from the store called me and said he'd talked to the owner about the collection, and they were willing to trade me the board game I'd mentioned. So I went back over and picked it up, perfectly happy that my cards were worth $50 in trade. Worth more than being on my shelf getting dusty!
The next day, the owner of the store called me. He said that after going over my collection more thoroughly, they had decided that it was worth more than what they had initially realized. So, he wanted to give me more credit. He offered to also give me an expansion for the board game I'd already traded for (or its equivalent).
So, big props to the owner and his MtG appraiser at Gamma Ray Games for their honesty, and for living up to the "F" in "FLGS". Anyone in Seattle, I recommend that you give them a try.
