Flying over the battlemat

IceBear, what manufacturer did you get your mat from? All the ones I've seen don't deal well with dry erase markers; they end up permanently dyed unless you erase them almost immediately.

I've always had to use wet-erase markers, like overhead projector pens, that you erase with a damp towel. With those, I've left a dungeon drawn on the map for weeks at a time, and had it wipe off with no trouble.

[Edit: That's a damp towel. Not a damn towel.]

Hmmm - you know maybe I am using wet erase pens :) I do erase my drawings almost right away (I only sketch out the area for combat purposes or to clarifiy something if my descriptions are wrong). It usually comes off with a paper towel, but if I do leave it too long I have to use water.

Not sure of the manufacturer. I'll see if I can find it later.

stuff to use...

Well i have seen a huge amout of things used from the big honking dice (i swear they keep getting bigger, at winter fantasy they had 3 inch d20s they keep getting bigger and bigger)

the clear boxes that d6s come in make good flight stands you can put a die on it with a mini to indicate height

also the things they put in pizza boxes to keep the box from colapsing into the pizza are really good for flying minis and again you can put a die to indicate height.

an idea i have been playing with would be a magnetic battle mat that has stackable magnetic cubes for height, i fear it would not be very transportable tho :(

We are overlooking one of the most readily available hight indicators around.. Checkers! They are wide enough that you don't have to worry about your carefully painted Mini's falling off, and can be easily stacked so they won't tumble easily when moved around the battle map.

Just indicate before combat that each checker is 10 feet, then stack them up alternating colors so you can keep track of how high each mini is.

If you want to get more in depth or are dealing with extreme hights just pick up a set of poker chips which have more colors to use. The blues could be 5 feet, reds 10, white 50 ect.. Then just pile them up to what ever number you need. A dragon at 100 feet would be on two white poker chips, while the mage on a flying carpet at 75 feet would be on a white, two reds, and a blue.

We use those, althought because the grid on our board is a little bit too small, the boxes are too proves to be slightly too big. We still make due though.

We've often talked about having a small LCD screen with programmed (or scanned) minitures being moved by some kind of interface panel on the side.

Of course no such things exists. Yet. ;)

I've never liked 2d representations very much, because the little counters are usually too similar to distinguish at a glance. That'd probably be even more true on an LCD, which tends to distort colors when you're not viewing it straight on.

Me, I hope I live long enough to see practical hologram projection technology. That'd make one hell of a nifty game table. ("Just then, the door crashes open, and ten ogres storm into the room! Computer, place ten ogres in the corridor.")

I've had the exact same dream. God, that would be cool.
