Focusing on dragon-hunting

Isida Kep'tukari ran a PBP game here called Vasorn: World Under Dragonfire. I think the idea was similar to Reign of Fire. The dragons ruled the skies, and everyone humanoid had retreated to the drow caverns where they formed a shaky alliance trying to take back the surface.

I'd be tempted to handle it as a new land ruled by dragons that the humans are contesting. Think the European conquest of America, but the natives have dragon protectors. Or as a Dragonstar takeoff. A gigantic colony ship full of dragon eggs crashes. The ship's programming speeds up the hatching mode, and uses the last of its temporal adjuster to bring a round hundred hatchlings to adult or older to act as protectors. The Hundred become the rulers of a new, rapidly expanding dragon realm that spreads faster than the news.

I just ran a 5-session mini-campaign all about dragonslaying. Maybe you can mine it for some ideas.

The short version is that the PCs worked for nation A, which is hostile to nation B, and a famous Dragonslayer (Sir Nicholas) was offering his services to the ruler of nation B to deal with a pesky dragon. The PCs needed to slay a few dragons to earn cred with Sir Nicholas, so they could get close enough to the prince of nation B to make sure he died during the final dragon hunt.

I had a blast with the game. I hope yours turns out great.

Here's the setting so far:

- Based on Returned Abeir, from the 4e FR setting.
- Dragonmarked Houses, as in Eberron, but much diminished in power and reach.
- Few "named" realms: Gontal, The Dusk Ports, The Sword Lands, Eskorn and Skelkor. Melabrauth, Fimbrul and Relmaur are widely considered wilderness.
- Eskorn's Jade Empress is human
but she is secretly controlled by the True Jade Empress, an ancient green dragon
- The most common type of dragon is the gray, followed by blacks. All other chromatics are rare, and metallics are unheard of.
- Dragon-hunters are a special type of mercenaries, and must obtain a charter from House Deneith if they are to operate legally. Unchartered dragon-hunters stick to the fringe towns.
