Foes for 6 lvl 5 PC's

[Zephrin the Lost]

I'm tweaking 'Khyber's Harvest' for 6 level 5 PC's. By the numbers, I should be able to replace the monster from Enc. 7 with a Squamous Maw (lvl 10 elite soldier), and the main villain from Enc 9 with an Young Gray Dragon (lvl 5 solo soldier). My version is a bit more dragon-centric.

How badly will this maul them if they have to fight both in one day (so short rests, no extended rests). those defenses and attacks seem pretty formidable. They are a Ranger, Paladin, Bard/Ranger, Cleric, Fighter, Wizard if that helps.

Would advise against the elite level 10 soldier... might make for an overly frustrating fight

Yeah... think I'm going to monster build that one down to level 5 standard, and maybe have two of them...

You should try to stay away from higher level solders, perhaps change them to skirmishers?

Great idea. OK I've made the Maw standard and a skirmisher. This drops the Xp to 500 and the Ac to 25. 5th level PC's should be +11 to hit or so, and even though they can't get CA from flanking on this monster, they'll find other ways I'm sure so they'll be hitting often enough. New HP total is 86. If I include two of these guys, it's a more dynamic battle, and I get to keep the corrupted dragon theme I was after.
