Kinda curious about this since it was brought up on another thread, so...

Okay, through means unknown, some very strange travellers have arrived on Earth. They claim to have come from another world, and have tavelled here by magic. Few people believe them, of course, but there's no doubting that they definitely have some weird and wonderful things that they are willing to sell.
You are walking to a session with a new gaming group, carrying you rulebooks under your arm, when someone in medieval clothing approaches you. "Sir(/madam), if I might have a moment of your time, you have the look of someone who might be interested in our wares."

He offers you the following items:
Ring of Invisibility
Boots of Speed
Belt of flying
Umbrella of Feather Fall
Cloak of Etherealness
Decanter of Endless Water
Helm of Teleportation

All of them work as you would expect them to (the umbrella will magically open if you hold it above your head).

What is the most you would pay for one of these items, and if you could pick only one, and have it for free, which would it be?

Any of these items in the real world would be worth more than everything I own, combined.

If I could have one, I'd go with the cloak of etherealness (though the helm of teleportation would be a close second). It gives flying, invisibility, and lets me pass through walls. :D

Same here. Might want to take the cloak out as it offers so many of the other's benefits. Cloak of Gaseous Form or something...

Yup... Cloak of Eatherealness, most of the others don't even come close.

As for paying for them... Since most of them would be only usefull for voyeurism / stunts / criminal acts, I doubt I'd pay for any of them... Well, except maybe the Cloak of Etherealness, again - I'd just need to find someone with a few million bucks in non-sequential bills that I wouldn't feel too guilty about liberating... :)

If I had an altruistic day, I would take the Decanter of Endless Water. But it would probably bring much hassle with it. Better suited for someone with more resources to safely give the created water to those who need it. (And than you need some clima-experts who know if additional water can endanger our world)

Belt of Flying might be great. But its also quite obviosuly if I would be flying all around the world (or even only from my flat to my university), and might cause unrequired attention towards me.
Oh, damn, and I would become fat, unless flying works like walking, just in the air. :)

The Umbrella of Feahter Fall is useless under most circumstances - I don`t fly often enough, nor do I climb very high...

Ring of Invisiblity sounds nice - voyeuristic fantasy comes true :) But it wouldn`t do much good, I guess, and unless I want to become a criminal, it would have little use. (Though stealing some money to no longer have to care about the personal-financial future might be nice... Unfortunately, not beeing seen today does not mean you leave no traces...)

Cloak of Eathralness. A combination of flying and invisibilty might be nice. Still, the same problems as for the single items apply...

Helm of Teleportation is a nice choice, though if its only limited to three uses per day, it would have little value for my average life, I guess. But if I wanted to visit the world it might be okay - but if I wasn`t already there, Teleport would be useless... Maybe again a good item for a criminal career, though still not perfect. (Actually, I believe there is no perfect way to do this, but...)

If I knew the decanter of endless water cannot endanger our world, I would probably take it, hoping to solve some problems.

I dunno about the cloak of Etherealness. Sure, you can walk through walls and go invisible, but only for 10 minutes a day. The ring of invisibility and the belt of flying work indefinitely.

I'm not sure how much I'd want to walk through walls, anyway. And these things do have uses other than for criminal activities. You can fight crime with them too, for example.

IMO, it's a toss up between the Helm of Teleportation and the belt of Flying. Sure, looking at people naked is all well and good, but does it really compare to being able to fly? Or being able to your girlfriend to an italian restraunt in Italy?

Okay, so maybe I would dabble in the odd crime with the helm of teleportation, but I don't think it would turn me into some career supervilain.

Defenitly the belt of flying; no more bicycles, no more traffic jams, just clean, free flying whenever I wanted to go anywhere. But the helmet of teleportation would be really cool too; the security cameras of a bank all of a sudden sees someone with a funky helmet appear in the vault, grab some cash, and as fast as he appeared he would disappear. Unless law enforcement knew what teleportation was about, they would have an extremely hard time solving that crime ;)

Uhm, a single decanter of endless water would just produce a small stream. It's not enough to solve world thirst, and it's not enough to influence the environment - if you let it run in the desert, the stream would probably just dry up after less than a kilometer.

Edit: I'd get it just to see the faces of scientists seeing the conservation of matter being thoroughly violated and then trying to figure it out. Though that works with all of these items, come to think about it.

Oh, it's not that special after a while (though if you do stumble on a helm of teleportation, I suggest Venice - it's smelly and messy, but as a place to take girls to nothing beats it...). I'd like to take mine camping in scotland, though. :D
