What game system would you recomend for someone who likes D&D but would like to try alternatives. Not necesarily fantasy, possibly sci-fi/cyberpunk but open to almost anything. Any ideas for a system which is relatively quick and cheap to get into (if the CORE rulebooks number in the 2 digits, I'm not interested ;) )?

Cheers,

Jodjod

I would suggest something d20 or OGL for the familiar rules.

Plenty of options, Judge Dredd, BAbylon 5, Stargate, Spycraft, Macho women with guns, d20 modern, Ravenloft Masque of the Red Death, Traveller d20, the rpgobjects post apocalyptic setting, Gamma World (free pdf from white wolf right now), Mutants and Masterminds.

I always seem to get that name wrong...doh!!!

I wasn't sure especially after reading Tim's comments comparing it with cartoon teen investigators...that certainly didn't remind of the Little Fears I own!

Actually, that was just my brain doing a bit of free association. Crothian said "Little Nightmares", which I understood as "Little Fears", a game where you play kids (IIRC), and that triggered the memory of the game "Meddling Kids", where you get to play in Scooby Doo type of adventures..

:D

Which of course led to me to believe that perhaps there was another RPG out there named Little Nightmares about cartoon investigators! lol

The confusion comes full circle. ;)

I'll have to ... uhm... <counts> seventh GURPS. You can download the 32-page GURPS Lite for free. And since 4th edition just came out, you should be able to pick up lots of 3rd edition material second hand.

Of course, the other criterion you should definitely take into account is whether you'll be able to find players in your area! If you're planning to teach a bunch of new players that doesn't matter so much, but otherwise you'll probably be stuck with 2-3 of the bigger names that have been mentioned.

Well, you really need to give a few more hints as to what you're looking for. Do you want something relatively similar to D20 System? Something specifically different? Different or the same in what ways?

With exactly zero information, i can only suggest some of my favorites:
  • Over the Edge: very rules-light, descriptive, freeform
  • Ars Magica: still the best magic system in RPGs; noticably less crunchy than D20 System (in fact, i consider it the upper end of "rules light"); i love the focus on long-term and group-oriented play, and it's still one of only a handful of RPGs set up for troupe-style play
  • Werewolf: the Apocalypse: actually, i rather dislike the mechanics--but less than i dislike D20 System. What i love about it is the setting: deeply spiritual, and one where the protagonists only know how to fight, and their opponents simply can't be defeated by violence. It's a wonderful tragic setup, full of pathos. (Haven't really looked at the new one, so no idea how much of this applies to it.)

Well, i'll stop for now, until i have more info.
