Forbidden Kingdoms

Thanks for your well wishes, Sam...and we hope in the future you'll continue to pick up OWC products. I'm glad you enjoyed the background history, like I said in the beginning it's a 'speculative exercise'.

As for being successful, well...I really guess it's how you look at it. Are people interested in the pulps again? Are they having fun playing/or reading FK? Do they hang out with their friends and plan outrageous escapes and daring-do? If the answer is "Yes" to any ONE of these simple questions, then I've succeeded.

In the GMC you'll see more of the 'World of FK' as it expands and takes shape. It's not about the mechanics, it's about the story. I want to have people come up to me at cons and tell me about their character, not what he/she/it can do. I don't need to hear how someone twinked out the rules just so they can be the biggest, baddest thing on the block. I *would* however, love to hear how someone's Hero defeated the Death Traps of Dr. Sardonicus and rescued the damsel in distress, lightning gun flashing and Cap'n Kirk leaping kick leading the way.

It's always been about the story, and I hope you partake in it.

Be good my friend and take care all you Heroes out there!

Ever Onward!

I haven't read FK yet. Hoping that one of the sites I do reviews for gets it. Having said that, one of my friends has bought it and is greatly impressed by the way martial arts are handled along with the use of psionic/mental abilities. I'll have to pry that book from him soon!

Just wanted to drop a note that someone is enjoying the book!

"Is the character supposed to total up all of his possessions, houses, cars, etc and instantly double it for no reason other than he hit 7th level?? That is just silly!"

Is that any more silly than anything else about a levels-based game? I would assume that the characters investments are continuing to grow - and a good DM would incorporate it into the campaign that way.

"...you'd have to be a gun-nut to be accurate in your constructions! You have to choose a propellant size, bullet caliber, barrel length, receiver, feed, and then add any special abilities it needs! How many people can do all of that for a long list of guns? "

Well everyone in the groups I've gamed with could do it - and in fact have many times as we've developed our own combat systems over the years. In fact in my designs I took into account muzzle energy and bullet area in the penetration and wound values! From a cursory glance at FK this seems to me to be one of the strong points of the game because it's simple and standardized yet allows ample customization.

And just in general, I think the strength of the OGL is that it encourages different perspectives. I'd hate to have every game just be D&D with different names for the character classes.

"By the way, anyone know when dogtags were first used in the military? For some reason, it
doesn't seem pulpish to me."

The purchasing of unofficial identification tags goes back to the Civil War. In the Navy, official identification tags, nicknamed "dog tags," go back to World War I. They were first prescribed by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels in General Order No. 294 of 12 May 1917. These first tags were oval, of Monel metal (a patented corrosion-resistant alloy of nickel and copper, with small amounts of iron and manganese), 1.25 inches wide and 1.5 inches long. Perforated at one end, a small single tag was to be worn around the neck on Monel wire "encased in a cotton sleeve." One side of the tag bore an etched print of the right index finger. The other side was stamped "U.S.N." and etched with individual's personal information. Officer's tags bore initials and surname; rank; and date of appointment, in numerals denoting month, day and year (e.g. 1.5.16). Enlisted tags bore initials and surname, with date of enlistment and date of birth, in numerals as on officer's tags.

"The example on pg 114 says a Flak jacket provides 4 points of protection (did they have those in the pulp era?)"

Yes. Flak Jackets are older than all get out (cept Dog Tags ;> ). Flak Jackets were used in the Korean War, WWII, and Vietnam.

First, thanks for the info on dogtags. The ones pictured, however, are the pair of stamped metallic rectangles with curved edges, more common to later eras.

I knew Flak jackets had been around for a while (30-40 yrs at least), but this game is set in one of 3 periods (depending upon your choice): late 1800s, early 1900s, or 1930s. If there were flak jackets in WW2 as you say, I guess having one in the 30's is not too far fetched... even if it may need to be made with weird science.

No problem. :)

Ahh, then that would be a Marine's dog tags from around 1918.

*nod* Seeing as the technology of the Flak Jacket is based on full plate, you would be correct.
