Actually, real-world ice is not so solid as you may think, since water can exist in so many phases. It makes a lot of sense for ice to flow through cracks and reform on the other side. Think glaciers etc.

Also, that was a good in-game call you made there. Compromising in actual play, then announce future changes after consideration, is the way to go.
