Appearance: Ulzim is a perfectly ordinary gnome. He is precisely average in height, weight, and coloring for your normal rock gnome. His nose is precisely large enough, no larger, his features even and bland. His clothes are of a good cut for a member of a dragonmarked house, with the appropriate amount of jewelry, all in the most perfectly up-to-date fashion. A perfectly ordinary rat, plump and sleek in the manner of a pet, sits fastidiously on his shoulder. His dragonmark is on the back of his left hand, and he rarely wears gloves so he can display the mark with pride.
Personality: Ulzim always tries to indicate that he knows what’s going on, though he usually does. He hates not being in the know, and is eager to uncover secrets of any sort. He toadies up to those who rank above him, and is distant and aloof to those below him. He has a rather large inferiority complex, and is eager to prove himself in his chosen field.
Background: Ulzim was born perfectly normal in nearly all ways. A good scholar, fine student, excellent researcher and scribe, he became a credit to his House early on… along with most of the others in his class. Though he was quite pleased to develop a dragonmark rather early in his life, he wasn’t alone amongst his peers in finding himself blessed. To be sure, he was a slightly-better-than-average scholar, yet he didn’t stand out, and that began to rankle. Who wanted to be “dependable Ulzim?”
It wasn’t until he started experimenting with his dragonmark that he found he had a few quirks. His dragonmark allowed him to delve into secrets of the ancient past, as well as understand the many languages around him. And it was in the past that the future could be found, wasn’t that what they had been taught in school?
Determined to be unique and noticed somehow, Ulzim poured his resources into not only keeping up in his scholarly duties of writing orders and battle reports, but in learning everything he could about magical quirks, nobles, history, and the lay of the land. Surely one of these, or all of these, could lead him to be the “one the House needed” in time! His dependability made him useful in many boring tasks, but when a steady hand was needed with a researcher’s quill, Ulzim was usually asked. And now, that steady hand was needed in a more… practical environment.
Ulzim’s keen eye and good memory (not to mention shameless eavesdropping, bribes, and sucking up) made him stand out to his superiors, who need a reliable, loyal House member to seek new resources in a joint venture. This is Ulzim’s big chance, and he’s going to prove himself if it kills him.
